Integrating Political Activism into Motherhood with Candy Baracat-Donovan

Integrating Political Activism into Motherhood with Candy Baracat-Donovan

Candy Baracat-Donovan is one half of Like A Sister, founded alongside her real life sister, Tiffany Miller. They use their backgrounds - Certified Lactation Counselor (Candy), trained postpartum doula (Tiffany) and new parent educators (both of them) to support new and expecting families of all kinds and they learn how to make the right choices for their unique family. We believe everyone needs a "sister" by their side to offer evidence-based information, non-judgmental and inclusive support as they learn how to parent. Our services are offered virtually, and we support clients around the world. Candy also consults with political campaigns, candidates and activists about how to use communication tools - especially social media - to create social change.

Candy and Erin discuss how to get involved in political activism, especially as busy moms.

Moms Can't Win: Examining Societal Messages Around Breastfeeding with Erin Harris

Erin Harris is a virtual lactation educator, creator of Nursing Mamas, and a veteran nursing mom of 4 ½ years. She is also the host of the podcast, Weaning It: A Podcast for Toddler Nursing Moms. She combines her two Master's Degrees in Health and Family communication, lactation knowledge, and personal nursing experience to focus on the parent-toddler nursing relationship. Birth Smarter with Ashley Brichter

    Birth Smarter with Ashley Brichter

Ashley Brichter is an educator, speaker, consultant, and entrepreneur. Despite her experience with hundreds of families as a doula and birth educator – like so many, her first birth did not “go as planned.” Better for it, she founded Birthsmarter in 2019, which provides unbiased, inclusive, and award-winning practical wisdom and guidance to the next generation of families.

Ashley and Erin discussed the importance of unbiased and inclusive birth education and support, drawing from Ashley's own home birth experience to highlight systemic issues, particularly regarding Black women's birthing experiences. Ashley promoted a shift towards patient-centered care, individual advocacy, and integrating medical interventions with feminist principles, emphasizing the need for systemic reform and equitable partnerships.
