Steve Berthel | Master Beer Brewer & Midwest Telemark Icon

Steve Berthel | Master Beer Brewer & Midwest Telemark Icon

Steve Berthel is another one of my favorite mid western Telemark skiers that I’ve met over the years. He grew up primarily in Minnesota where he learned how to ski on the local hills near his house and participated on the local ski team. He also spent many of his winters taking family vacations to Summit County, Colorado where he was able to experience the Rockies. It was during that time that he saw his first Telemark skiers at Monarch Mountain.
Then In 1974 he moved to Michigan. He was working at a local ski shop as a tech, skiing Timber Ridge, and was likely the first telemark skier in his area during that time. He was even told several times at different resorts that this type of skiing was not allowed at their hill for safety reasons and he would have to demonstrate his competency prior to being able to ride the Lifts.
In the late 1980s he started home brewing beer. He did that for a few years and during that time was introduced to Life Tools, a shop in Green Bay Wisconsin that had started a Telemark festival for the Midwest. They asked him to provide beer for the festival Which continued to be a staple for many years after. He became a professional beer brewer in 1996 and even owned his own brewery The Livery in Benton Harbor, Michigan in the mid-2000s.
He currently lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He loves playing pedal steel guitar along with Telemark skiing and every other outdoor activity.

Kurt Garcia | Founder of Motor City Tele

Kurt Garcia | Founder of Motor City Tele

Kurt Garcia grew up in Redford, MI just outside of Detroit. He went to college at Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula of the state where he first learned how to ski. While earning his degree as an Electrical Engineer his love for skiing grew and he spent countless hours skiing with his friends. After college he moved back to Detroit. By chance a friend invited him to start teaching skiing at Mt. Brighton. That same friend ended up introducing him to Telemark skiing as well as few years after that.
After years of people asking he and his friends where they could find Telemark gear to try locally, he decided to buy some additional gear to start a modest fleet to rent out to people. In 2020 he set up an LLC under the name Motor City Tele and began renting Telemark equipment to interested folks from the area.

Keith Rodney | PSIA Telemark Demo Team Member & Current V.P. of the United States Telemark Ski Association

Keith Rodney | PSIA Telemark Demo Team Member & Current V.P. of the United States Telemark Ski Association

Keith Rodney grew up on the east coast of the United States. He started skiing towards the end of high school but was immediately hooked and knew he'd found one his passions in life. His love of both skiing and also building led him to a technical college in Vermont where he could focus on both while getting an education.
It wasn't long until he migrated out west to the rocky mountains of Colorado. It was there that he was first introduced to Telemark skiing which would become his preferred method of snow travel.
Rodney was recently named to the US National Telemark Demo Team along with teammate Jim Shaw. The teams travel to deliver on-snow snow sports instructor training and guide the development of educational curriculum for the national association, such as new technical and teaching manuals, magazine articles, video content, and more and more webinars and online content.
On top of all of his responsibilities with his new assignment with the team, Rodney is also the acting V.P. for the United States Telemark Ski Association (USTSA).
