Ian Blackhall Scott | Emerging Fine Artist & Telemark Skier

Inspired by the philosophies and techniques of the 19th century Hudson River School of artists, Ian’s artistic vision is one of revival. He works to restore the classical landscape movement with a modern insight on preservation ethics and reverence for wild spaces. Ian’s goal is not to create a perfect likeness of wild places, rather to communicate the unique feeling of time and place. More often than not, his creative process involves skiing, hiking, or biking to plein air painting locations across the American West.

Sun Valley Tele | Julian Tyo, Kyle Livingston and Brendan Coyle

Sun Valley Tele | Julian Tyo, Kyle Livingston and Brendan Coyle

Sun Valley Tele is a loose collective of like-minded skiers keeping the freeheel faith alive in the historic telemark bastion of Sun Valley, Idaho. The current roster took the reigns from local tele personality Danny “Irie” Walton in 2011, with 8-10 “board members” keeping the good times rolling for the last 11 years, mostly via one obnoxious group text. Though details remain hazy, the “organization” has been hosting annual events since the late 70s, persevering though multiple recessions, the advent of Dynafit, housing insecurity and innumerable low snow years before finally being stopped in their tracks by the pandemic in 2020. 2022 marked the triumphant return of the Sun Valley Tele event calendar with regional meetups at Bogus Basin, Soldier Mountain, and Rotarun ski area before culminating April 9th at the traditional Hawaiian Nationals slalom race and demo event. The 2022 Hawaiian Nationals will be remembered by some as “the worst snow we’ve ever skied”, but commemorated by all as “one helluva time” with deep crews and individuals answering the siren’s call from no fewer than 7 states across the west. This year’s Hawaiians highlights included 85 racers, free beer from series sponsor Sawtooth Brewery, the legendary mega-raffle, a DJ, reports of a speakeasy tattoo parlor, and complimentary demos from allies Bishop Bindings and 22 Designs. Sun Valley Tele would like to thank their sponsors, resort partners, Ullr, and most importantly their families for facilitating their continued telemark evangelism.

Mike Russell | Backcountry Coordinator at National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS)

Mike Russell | Backcountry Coordinator at National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS)

Mike Russell grew up in the farmlands of Delaware, as an athletic kid who was introduced to the Outdoors through Boy Scouts. This exposure to the outdoors at a young age, eventually led him to move to Colorado to pursue big dreams of big mountain skiing. It was in Colorado that he took an instructional clinic and absolutely fell in love with the tele turn.
Not only does Mike pursue ski goals for himself, he gives back to the community by organizing and leading backcountry adventures for the National Brotherhood of Skiers. This included bringing a Telemark demo to the NBS annual event last year, where he shared the Telemark turn with countless other snow loving people in the group.

Connie Marshall | Alta Legend & Telemark Skier

Connie Marshall | Alta Legend & Telemark Skier

Connie Marshall is originally from Ohio where she was first introduced to skiing. As a young adult she headed west to Utah where she landed a job in the ticket office at Alta Ski Area.  What she thought would be a couple of seasons in Utah’s powder Mecca, turned into a 44-year career at the iconic ski area in Little Cottonwood Canyon. In the early 1990s she became Alta’s first Marketing & PR Manager and was instrumental during her tenure for bringing Alta to the forefront of ski culture around the world. Her creation of an athlete and photography team over 20 years ago was a key ingredient in keeping ski magazine and movie watchers salivating for the deep days in Utah.
She started Telemark skiing around 1978 when a small group of people that worked at the mountain started picking up gear and learning the turn and she’s still  dropping a knee all of these years later.

Doing us a solid

We should say thanks for keeping us informed and your passion behind each episode. I listen each week as I do my morning workout. I have listened to all kinds of podcast over the years and Josh keeps it fresh and engaging each time. Thanks for keeping the tele spirit going brother.

We want more Nate!

That guy is the “gold standard” of guests. I don’t necessarily agree with everything he says, but I appreciate his well thought perspective. It was also nice to have a little bit of back-and-forth debate/discussion between him and Josh in the most recent episode. Made for an even more engaging discussion than normal.

Telemark Info

Great to have this for the telemark community and to spur innovation and gather gear to share with those in need of replacement parts. Fun to hear the conversations.
