Wonderfully Entertaining!
I truly find the format to this podcast to be refreshing and unique. Genuine conversations without a predetermined agenda. The pace and tone Gala maintains; makes the podcast feel like you are sitting at a table with friends immersed in privileged conversations.
Love Gala, love (most) of the episodes.
Let me first say I love the podcast! I’ve been a fan of Gala since my intro to Video Archives.
She is a thoughtful interviewer and knows her stuff.
But one guest got completely under my skin. Steven Meiers Dominguez was next level obnoxious. Besides the, “oh I want your life.” “Yeah I’ve heard that four times today.” And the desperate need to convince everyone how cool his taste is (taking shots at Speilberg, edgy) it was the waxing nostalgic about a time he didn’t experience. Sorry guy, if you grew up with the first web browsers then you didn’t actually grow up in the era you are wistfully recalling. I did grow up in that era, and as much as the younger generation likes to think there was a curmudgeonly hip dude behind every counter who would steer you in the right direction, that rarely happened. And I grew up in Chicago, a major metropolitan city with lots of record stores and video shops. What really happened was, you hunted those stores, but you also read zines or the Chicago Reader or some free magazine (Vice) that told you want was cool so you could go back to the store and not get ridiculed for your choices. The internet didn’t destroy that, it made it all substantially easier. There is much less “gatekeeping” in the world when you have an endless library of genres and stories to choose from. Just because some dude at Wax Tracks told you to listen to Joni Mitchell, doesn’t mean he wasn’t telling everyone else the same thing. I’ll take an algorithm over that any day.
OK my rant is over, but I do love the show!
