Welcome to the Holderness Family Podcast! On Facebook and YouTube we are known as The Holderness Family. We make those silly songs and skits with our kids, but on this podcast, it's just us... the real us. The non-Christmas-jammies-us, the why-can't-my-socks-be-on-the-kitchen-counter-us (Penn) the why-do-I-have-to-go-outside-and-talk-to-people-us (Kim). On this podcast, we will share the real-life ups and downs of living together, working together, raising kids together, in what we hope is a funny and entertaining way. We will be taking questions that we are likely unqualified to answer (absolutely unqualified to answer) but we are hoping that the show will make all of your beautiful families realize you're not alone. You're not alone. We are all a hot mess... a HolderMess. The HolderMess: the Holderness Family PodcastThank you for subscribing and listening!Hosted by Kim & Penn HoldernessProduced by Max Trujillo

(Mostly) Thriving With ADHD - Live from SXSW!
Penn here! This week, we recorded a live podcast at SXSW in Austin, Texas about how to (mostly) thrive with ADHD. We talk about how the world wasn’t built for ADHD and what systems I’ve put in place to make life more manageable. My hope is that we can find more understanding for those of us with different, but wonderful brains. If you have ADHD, how would you change your school or workplace to be more ADHD friendly? Big thanks to everyone who attended, we are so excited to get our new book out into the universe. You can pre-order it now: Our New Book, ADHD Is Awesome!

We Were Loud Wrong
Recently, we had the privilege of going on family vacation in the Caribbean and one of the activities we planned was snorkeling. He was particularly excited about seeing the “nerf shark.” (Yes, he said nerf shark instead of nurse shark.) Penn is very smart. He’s one of those annoying people who took the SAT and got an amazing score the first time. So, I cannot tell you how happy it made me that he thought a nurse shark was called a nerf shark. Easily my top moment on vacation.
This story led us to talking about the other things we’ve gotten loud wrong in our lives this week on our podcast.

Stop Overworking with Celeste Headlee
We have very fun (but weird) jobs where we have to always be producing something. Small business owners know that you have to hustle in order to make a living. Your success (or failure) is a direct correlation of your work. And it’s a lot of pressure. This week on our podcast, we interviewed Celeste Headlee, author of Do Nothing: How To Break Away From Overworking, Overdoing, and Underliving.
I have to admit some of her advice about slowing down did not seem like it could work for small business owners like Penn and I. It was refreshing to hear even Celeste (who is self-employed) didn’t believe that slowing down could lead to the same, if not more success. Celeste gave us great advice to help me break my busy addiction. Do you have a hard time slowing down?

Is It Too Late To Change My Parenting? with Dr. Hope Seidel
I am pretty sure I didn’t do “gentle parenting” with my kids. To be clear, Penn and I don’t really have to discipline our children. They are wonderful kids and on their way to be amazing adults. But when they were toddlers having a tantrum, I can’t say that I was gentle. But should I be? Is it too late to change my parenting? Enter our dear friend, Dr. Hope Seidel, a parenting coach and pediatrician. When I posed this question to Dr. Hope, she responded: “Why do you think you need to change, Kim? Because a book told you so?”
This is why I need Dr. Hope in my life and why I am so glad she joined our podcast discussion this week. She reminded us that it’s important to ask yourself: What am I hoping my kids will be, and am I creating a home that promotes that vision? Wacky Questions For Your Valentine
There was a time when we’d have a reservation at a cozy restaurant to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Things are different now, but not “bad” different. I don’t love my husband any less. In fact, there’s no way I could love him more, but we are not in our date night era. So this week, our producer Ann Marie Taepke (she also plays our Midwest Neighbor in videos) joins us! When you've been together for a long time, it's hard to find new things to talk about. Ann Marie brought us 10 wacky questions to make us laugh and learn more about each other. (Please message us and tell us what song you would sing to save the world!)
You can get a copy of the questions we ask on the show here: https://theholdernessfamily.com/10-wacky-questions-for-your-valentine/

Taylor Swift, Super Bowl, and Misogyny with Carlos Whittaker
Last week, we put out a fun video about Taylor Swift and the Super Bowl. It went viral and for the most part people loved it. But some of the comments got us talking enough to feel like we needed to do a podcast on it. Over the past couple months, Taylor Swift has received criticism for supporting her boyfriend Travis Kelce in his career. Some of the recent claims about her are misogynistic and awful. Would anyone say these things if an internationally famous male musician was supporting his female girlfriend? No. (In fact, he would probably be praised.)
This week we unpack with our friend Carlos Whitaker. He’s a self-proclaimed “hope dealer” who has found a way to bring people together, people of different political parties, races, religions, to have really hard conversations. Carlos Whittaker is an author, speaker, and storyteller who is bringing hope to humans all over the world. What I love is his saying: "I don’t stand with issues, I walk with people." You can learn more about Carlos and his work here: https://www.carloswhittaker.com/

Customer Reviews
Great topic!
I hardly ever take the time to write a review, but this was such a great topic and so relevant for me right now. I have a daughter who is a senior in high school, and a son who is in eighth grade they’re both moving on to the next phase next year so it’s a big year for us. And I’ve often asked myself that question for all the things I think I might’ve missed the boat on when they were little, Can I change that now? Also, I absolutely love your podcast and all your reels on Instagram ( am I saying that right? :)) And I’m looking forward to Penn’s book on ADHD coming out! Thanks for all you do!
Let’s be friends
The Holderness family podcast is like listening to friends chat who are funny, inspiring, relatable, always entertaining and full of variety. Congrats on your award in “Other” category, it totally fits. All your interviews and topics are so varied and awesome. Kim you are fabulous. Penn you are talented. I know you don’t leave the house much, but I would love to run into in public, however I don’t get to Raleigh at all.
Clean, hilarious entertainment…
The best marriage therapy is laughing together at our human foibles. The Holderness’ show us how.
