Trump makes good on tariffs promise and threatens more - February 03, 2025

European leaders are bracing for U.S. tariffs after President Donald Trump imposed sweeping levies on Mexico, Canada and China that will affect billions of dollars' worth of trade. On Monday, Trump agreed to a one month pause on tariffs planned for Mexico as negotiations continue. He also threatened steeper tariffs elsewhere, telling reporters it will “definitely happen” with the European Union. The U.S. president said Americans could feel “some pain,” but it will “worth the price” to enhance U.S. interests. We speak with Joel Paul, professor of constitutional law, international business and trade, foreign relations and national security law at UC Law San Francisco.

Tragedy in the skies over Washington, DC - January 30, 2025

The investigation into a midair collision between a jetliner and U.S. Army helicopter just outside of the U.S. Capital has begun. There were no survivors. The American Airlines jet had 64 passengers and crew onboard. The Blackhawk helicopter had a crew of three. The two aircraft collided as the passenger jet was on its final approach to Reagan National Airport and crashed into the Potomac River. We spoke with William Angelley, an aviation crash attorney and former Navy pilot about the investigation.

Doomsday Clock moved closest ever to midnight - January 28, 2025

Scientists have set the so-called Doomsday Clock closer to midnight, highlighting what they perceive to be heightened dangers and increased probability of global disaster. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists announced Tuesday they have moved the minute hand on their clock to 89 seconds to midnight. Scientists citing Russian nuclear threats, other world conflicts, artificial intelligence and climate change as factors underlying the risks of global catastrophe. The Bulletin, a Chicago-based nonprofit, created the clock in 1947 during the Cold War tensions that followed World War Two. We spoke with Dr. Herbert Lin, a member of the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and senior researcher at Stanford University.
