Present Shock - Tech: Existential Threat or Life Support?

Present Shock - Tech: Existential Threat or Life Support?

Days of wonder, days of rage. We're living through an information revolution as profound as any since Gutenberg and the printing press, but are we the people, the so-called "users", using the technology or is the technology using us and for what ends? How can we harness this particular transformation for good? That’s the question, and we have some answers from Data & Society fellow Chancey Fleet, Team Human's Douglas Rushkoff, and technologist, educator, and organizer Nabil Hassein. Music in the Middle: “Do Not React” by TQX featuring Invenio Singers from the album Global Intimacy.

Dr. Priyamvada Gopal: Self-Determination Arising from Resistance

In this episode of The Laura Flanders Show, author and scholar Dr. Priyamvada Gopal discusses her latest book, Insurgent Empire, which examines the history of abolition and rebellion under colonial rule to demonstrate how colonized peoples served as active participants in their own liberation, reshaping ideas around freedom and self-determination during the expansion of capitalism and empire. “Liberty can mean many things, not just, for example, the freedom to earn a meager wage,” Dr. Gopal says. Graphic Artists Drawing Comix At The Margins: Nate Powell and Mohammad Saba'aneh

Graphic Artists Drawing Comix At The Margins: Nate Powell and Mohammad Saba'aneh

This show originally aired 15 months ago, before the death of civil rights rights movement leader representative John Lewis on July 17, 2020. Laura caught up with Nate recently to ask him about his understanding of the legacy of Lewis with whom he worked on the award winning graphic novel the March trilogy. This week's episode:
Far more than an escape, comics can pack a political punch, as does the work of this week’s guests. First up, Mohammad Sabaaneh describes how he transposes his lived experience to the page, exposing the cruelties of Israeli occupation and celebrating popular resistance as the path forward. Then, Nate Powell uses his craft to break down a specifically American phenomenon – the creep of fascist aesthetics into our police and consumer choices. Music in the Middle: “The Burning City” by Q Burns Abstract Message from his album “Audio Totem Pole” courtesy of the artist.

    Farm Worker to Farm Owner

There’s a shift happening in American agriculture that has been hard to spot. Farm workers have entered mainstream consciousness through coverage of essential workers during Covid-19. We may be talking about the value of their labor but what about their livelihoods? What would it mean for farm workers to become farm owners? Best place for solutions

I love the emphasis on systems change. There are plenty of podcasts out there talking about why things need to be different, but they never explain how that could actually happen. The LF Show actually explains what the alternatives are, how they can work, and who is working to make them happen. It's both informative and uplifting.

A review for Laura Flanders

I saw and heard Laura Flanders on (I think) both Free Speech TV and Link TV. Both are favorites of mine. I contribute to both on the regular. I was at The Peace Ball in DC a few years back with My youngest Son and a bunch of Revolutionary Sheroes and Heroes. Laura was/is one of those.

I’m a retired Baltimore City firefighter (28 yrs of service- retired 5/2019). Laura has done work around the world including My town (which I call Tubman City - after Harriet Tubman). I was fighting fire five years ago April 27, 2015 near where Freddie Gray was fatally injured. We called it - The Uprising. Most called it a riot. Laura did some activist journalism here just like she and her team does around the globe. It was great work.

A couple of weeks ago I was watching Laura do an interview with Mab Segrest who wrote ‘Memoir of a Race Traitor’ & ‘Administrations of Lunacy’. In that 30 minutes I learned so much. I have both those books and have almost finished’Memoir’. That one was written 25 years ago. Mab is a heckuva writer and I’m so glad that Laura and her show turned me on. The work that she does is some of the radical, fundamental work that MLK Jr. told us was needed in this world if humanity was to have a chance at surviving.

I could go on but this is a review and not an essay. I’ll suffice it to say that The Laura Flanders Show is da Bomb! Support her and her ilk. We need all of us on board! SOLIDARITY Y’ALL!✊🏿

Got to listen to understand our world

The perspectives and depth through which Laura shares her insight and engages her interviewees really shows the complexities of global issues that everyone should care about. This should be in your weekly routine to be a more engaged and informed individual.
