On this episode of American Prestige, we welcome to the podcast, actor Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Call Me By Your Name, Boardwalk Empire) to discuss his role in the new Broadway play, Patriots, which portrays billionaire Boris Berezovsky’s (Stuhlbarg) relationship with Vladimir Putin (Will Keen) in 1991. The group discusses the challenges in nuanced portrayals of Berezovsky and Putin, how preparing for the character pushed Michael to reframe his perspective on the end of the USSR, the resonance between the events of the play and the current situation in the United States, notions of homeland and patriotism for Berezovsky, and more.
Patriots is playing now on Broadway through June 23 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
The documentary series, Russia 1985–1999: TraumaZone, that Michael referenced was created by Adam Curtis.

Democrats vs. Billionaires, plus Hamas vs. Fatah | Start Making Sense

The issues and the language that win for Democrats: research shows it’s not just “jobs,” but attacking the rich. Bhaskar Sunkara, President of The Nation and author of The Socialist Manifesto, explains.
Also: why did Hamas decide to provoke massive Israeli retaliation now? Hussein Ibish, who writes for The Atlantic, the New York Times, and Daily Beast, says Hamas had a clear political goal on October 7: to defeat the Palestinian secular nationalists of Fatah and the PLO.

The Cold War's Afterlife, Pt. 2 w/ Penny Von Eschen | American Prestige

The Cold War's Afterlife, Pt. 2 w/ Penny Von Eschen | American Prestige

On this episode of American Prestige, Danny and Derek again chat with Penny Von Eschen, William R. Kennan Jr. professor of American studies and professor of history at UVA, about her book Paradoxes of Nostalgia: Cold War Triumphalism and Global Disorder since 1989. This second part of the conversation picks up with Cold War nostalgia in American pop culture, the 90s search for a new “bad guy” in places like DPRK/North Korea and the Balkans, the “kitschification” of the Cold War, ways this nostalgia manifested throughout the War on Terror, how U.S.-Russia relations were reshaped in the 1990s and 2000s, and the influences of this refracted view of the Cold War on the “New Cold War” dynamic we’re seeing today.

Naomi Klein

There is problem with your view of Taibi. He is a journalist and a muckraker. He tries not to have a political view. He does not support Tucker or Rachel. He is a searcher for the truth with no censorship or bias. You do his very serious work a disservice to paint him with such a broad brush

walker current head of a misnamed group/young americans for freedom fits right into his MO. we in WI had to suffer through too many years of the walker regime in example right to work. that actually means cutting the strength of unions. that lie title has stuck, my co-worker at a union shop never even knew what that meant! this is what those slime ball walker/gop evil wannabe rulers do, they always come up with a title of what they are, do or are going to do that sounds benign but is actually malignant. HATE Walker and his ilk.

Content is a 5 but it rates a 2 due to…

The HOST and his sound engineering. There so many pauses and unnecessary stops and starts along with the fact that it sounds like he is either leaning into the mic, or away from the mic all within the same sentence! The inconsistencies make it very difficult to listen to! He also sometimes speaks so fast that he miss pronounces words and proper names such as “Alexandria Ocasio Cortez”! Surely there is someone at the nation who is more suited to the podcast medium!
