    Identifying the Leader’s Attachment Style: Understanding your Energy and Motivation

    Identifying the Leader’s Attachment Style: Understanding your Energy and Motivation Attachment is about how you respond to distress, and the adaptive patterns of how you react are your attachment style. Attachment style is an energy that is both internal and external of how you respond to your team and organization. This episode is explicitly about studying your energy and motivation, and the energy and motivation of the people you lead.  Distress triggers energy in your body to resolve the distress. Most people don’t know their go-to strategy when the attachment energy in their body is triggered, but how leaders handle this energy significantly impacts the success and efficiency of their team. Some leaders have a pursuer style, their body would instead mobilize others to join them in meeting the distress head-on because the fear of being stuck in the unknown is worse than the unknown or isolation. Other leaders have more of a withdrawer style. The body of a withdrawer style leader does any number of strategies to diminish the fear of meeting the distress head-on and things getting out of control seems like an unreasonable risk. These are two broad categories to describe how we handle the energy generated in these moments. We need to note that no one is absolutely in one or the other—we are all mixes of both. Neither is inherently a problem. The problem is when we don’t recognize both sides of them, and you become rigid. We want you to be aware of these strategies to help you be able to adapt as needed and to be more productive. A reactive leader creates insecurity in the organization. A secure leader creates safety and gets more results.  Homework and Challenge Review a time of distress you had recently, and you felt an energy shift that let you know something serious was going on. What did you feel your body want to do with the energy? Was your go-to strategy meant to dampen down to keep things from getting out of control? Was your go-to strategy meant to lean in towards the distress to find a solution because not having a resolution is more distressing?   Ask 3 of your reports, “What is it like to be on the receiving end of my leadership?”.     Adaptability: The Ability to Move Between Motivational Forces

    In this episode we discuss the importance of a leader being able to go back and forth between the two motivational forces. Leadership requires constant attunement as leaders  Adaptability Structure Clarity How clear your team is a direct reflection of the leadership. Does everyone know their seat on the bus? Clarity creates safety. Cohesion Do people know what, why, and how of their role and how their role matters to the mission of the organization? How organized is your team? You become a reactive leader when there isn’t clarity and cohesion. Reactive leaders are unsafe and their effectiveness in their organization drops. Written mission statements are good, but it is more powerful when the leader lives out the mission (a living demonstration). A question to assess cohesion and clarity-“If the leader was removed could the mission continue, or would it come to a grinding halt?” You are the mission statement as a leader what does your energy dictate? Challenge: The Push See people’s potential and speak that over them. You have to embody this in your own life and ask, “Am I growing as a leader?” Is there a path for your people to grow? People are not primarily motivated by money. Attunement Repair An attuned leader can repair when there is disruption. Safety is created in organizations when there can be repair after a disruption. It’s dangerous when you are not aware of your mistakes and/or you are not repairing. The problem is when you leave things in a state of disruption, this is not leadership. Ratio 5 points of attunement for every 1 point of coaching or correction. (if already healthy) If your team is unhealthy or in some way losing/under distress the ratio goes to 15:1. Attuning to anything that helps them feel honored, appreciated, or encouraged. Where is your ratio with the people who report to you? You don’t have to be touchy-feely, you just have to care about them as people, and convey that you care in a manner genuine to you. Rigidity: Why are doing what you are doing most of the time? What are you consistently doing as a leader? Why are you doing this? Are you being rigid or flexible (structure & attunement) in your role as a leader? The definition of a secure leader is a leader who is able to be flexible between these two motivational forces. Unhealth is being rigid when off balance. What is my leadership founded on? What motivates me?  Practical Challenge Have a weekly evaluation of how you are doing with your ratios as a leader. Get 2-3 other people to give you their opinions. Think about, “What’s it like to be on the receiving end of me? What would it be like to follow me?” How connected you are with yourself is the best predictor of your adaptability between these two forces (structure & attunement). Ask yourself, “How connected am I with myself (faith, family, values, community)?”  Thank you for listening.     Attunement/Relational Side of Leadership

    In this episode, we discuss the other side of leadership—the attunement/relational side. The attunement aspect is about getting on the same emotional channel with those you lead to know where they are and how you need to connect with them at the moment.   7 Walk Away Points Think about how you utilize your time to give enough touches (points of relational contact) with the people on your team.  It is essential to keep a balance between structure and attunement. For every coach (structure), there need to be five points of attunement. In struggling relationships, that ratio goes up to 15 to one.  It is important to recognize mis-attunement and move to repair.  Make people feel heard.  Make sure people know their identity as a person is not solely wrapped up in their performance. If they feel you value their performance above their humanity, you won't get the most from them.  See those you lead as valuable assets and treat them as such.  The willingness and ability of a leader to repair the connection with their followers are correlated with how the leader views themself, others, and the organization.   Thank you for listening. In this episode, we talk about the structural side of leadership.  Structural Side 7 Takeaways Your ability to set the structure and get more from people is rooted in who you are as a person and not just what you do as an occupation. Your relationships and worldview are important aspects of your leadership. As a leader, you have permission to push. People are often capable of more than they realize they need someone to help them get the most out of their gifts and talents. As a leader, you model structure and growth by your personal example. Your passion for growth is contagious for those who follow you. Your integrity is vital to your role. Mean what you say and follow through on what you say. Leaders must pursue justice. Your followers must know that you care about equality and fairness if you are going to get the most out of them. Your leadership must be adaptive.
