Author Lon Davis talks about his new book Ma and Pa Kettle on Film. Great comedy and film stories

Our special guest today is author and film historian Lon Davis. We discuss his amazing new book, Ma and Pa Kettle on Film from Bear Manor Books. Now available on Amazon Their names alone can bring a smile to the face of any classic movie buff. Portrayed by veteran stage and screen actors Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride, Ma and Pa first won the hearts of moviegoers in The Egg and I in 1947. Handily stealing the spotlight from the film’s nominal leads, the Kettles were given their own series. The resulting B-pictures were so successful that they reportedly saved Universal studios from bankruptcy. Since then, Ma and Pa have been making new friends and fans with every passing generation. Whether they’re at the fair, on vacation, back on the farm, at Waikiki, in Paris, New York City, the Ozarks, or just at home, they can always be counted on to make viewers laugh out loud. Ma and Pa Kettle on Film, the first full-length book on that famous series, is filled with behind-the-scenes information, vivid descriptions of each film, still pictures, screencaps, movie ads, and hilarious dialogue that will make you laugh all over again. So, COME AND GET IT!“Everything you could possibly want to know about the Ma and Pa Kettle comedies is covered in this well-researched book. The authors’ enthusiasm is positively contagious.” —Leonard Maltin --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/RickLertzman/support

Etiquette & the New Hollywood with Author Ellen Easton

New Podcast: Etiquette, Hollywood and Ellen Easton We start off season two of our podcast with one of our favorite and most popular guests-the renowned author, bon-vivant, tea and etiquette authority and consultant Ellen Easton. What a fun and fascinating program! We turn to our guru Ellen to look at the etiquette and style in Hollywood during and after the pandemic With the granddaddy of awards programs awaits us on Sunday, April 25th, many believe it will devolve into the obscene mix of Grammy Awards or the sloppiness of The Golden Globes where some award winners accepted their prize looking like they had Gabby Hayes as their stylist. Fortunately, the Oscar show producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins have sent a letter to all nominees saying there will be virtual or Zoom acceptance – you must attend and that there WILL be a dress code. The producers also offer tips on dress code, saying the usual formal look is fine but please don’t go “casual.” In other words, no Jason Sudeikis hoodies, please. “We’re aiming for a fusion of Inspirational and Aspirational, which in actual words means formal is totally cool if you want to go there, but casual is really not,” the letter says. Today’s program is a fascinating mix of thoughts, commentary and the great stories that only a raconteur like Ellen can tell with panache Ellen Easton, author of Afternoon Tea – Tips, Terms and Traditions (Red Wagon Press), a lifestyle and etiquette industry leader, keynote speaker and product spokesperson, is a hospitality, design, and retail consultant whose clients have included The Waldorf Astoria, Plaza Hotels and Bergdorf Goodman. Easton’s family traces their tea roots to the early 1800s when ancestors first introduced tea plants from India and China to the Colony of Cylon, this building one of the largest and best-cultivated tea estates on the island. Enjoy this large collection of Ellen Easton’s TEA TRAVELS™ articles and recipes covering the history, traditions, etiquette, protocols and menus Her columns could be found at: https://whatscookingamerica.net/EllenEaston/TeaTravelsIndex.htm --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/RickLertzman/support

RAT PACK A NEW BOOK REVEALS HOW THE GROUP CAME TOGETHER AND BECAME LEGENDARY “We’re just the cocktail of the moment.” —Dean Martin You think you know the Rat Pack? Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford collectively have been called by that moniker. “They were friends through business.” It was the screenplay for 1960’s Ocean’s 11 that united the five. “They came up with a plan to, during the day, shoot the film in Las Vegas, and at night do a show,” Lertzman explains. And while the mythology of the Rat Pack suggests that the boys were partying all night, it wasn’t exactly like that. “These guys were actually in their 40s, had kids and were hardly the swingers that they were portrayed as on-screen,” he says. END OF AN ERA? You might think that the party has been going on for 60 years, but it turns out that, like the Kennedys and Camelot, the group’s heyday only existed for a brief shining moment “This whole Rat Pack era only really lasted a year,” says Richard Lertz- man, whose new book Deconstructing the Rat Pack: Joey, the Mob, and the Summit, comes out Oct. 5. “They were at the height of the entertainment world,” he tells Closer, “but it only lasted through 1960.” The idea for the group began as part of a marketing plan for the Sands Ho- tel in Las Vegas, of which Frank owned a small percentage, says Lertzman, add- ing that it was an attempt to “put Vegas on the map.” And while the entertainers all knew each other, “these guys did not hang out. They were friends, but they were Business partners Still, the few weeks in 1960 they spent filming and performing solidified a leg- end. For a moment in time, there was no bigger act than the Rat Pack. “In 1960, ev- erything clicked. It is an era onto itself,” Lertzman explains. “It still resonates with many people today who want to go back and live in that time of swingers” Want to interview the authors?
