Carmen Maria Machado is the author of Her Body and Other Parties, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. Her new acclaimed memoir In the Dream House uses form and memory to excavate and explore an abusive queer relationship. The “Dream House” is both a physical place and the site of an emotional and psychological maelstrom. Machado’s inventive memoir, told non-linearly through over a hundred lenses, mimics the disorienting process of being immersed in an abusive relationship, and although the content is intense and heartbreaking at times, the power of her writing pulls the reader in and forward. In the episode, we talked about embodiment in writing, her process of writing In the Dream House, the challenges of living and making art during a time of such chaos and suffering, and some of her sources of inspiration.

adrienne maree brown is the author of Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good. She is a writer, social justice facilitator, pleasure activist, healer and doula living in Detroit. She cohosts the podcast How to Survive the End of the World.

In our conversation, adrienne talked about the power of vulnerability and truth-telling in intimate relationships and movement work; about the way mothers have always been on the forefront of social change by working for a better future for the kids in their care; and about the pleasure activism and witchery of Beyonce and Lizzo. adrienne also discussed how shifting cultural beliefs open the way to shape ourselves beyond gender; how recent protests in Puerto Rico reveal possibilities in making movement space one of joy, pleasure, and connection; and how the practice of radical honesty can help us protect the miracle of our lives.

Sonya Passi is the founder and CEO of FreeFrom, a national organization on a mission to create pathways to financial security and long-term safety for survivors of gender-based violence. Sonya has been a domestic violence activist since she was 16 years old. Before founding FreeFrom, she launched the Family Violence Appellate Project while earning her law degree at UC Berkeley.

Sonya talked about the need to understand and address the pervasive financial abuse that occurs in domestic violence situations on an individual, community, and systemic level; about the transformational work that FreeFrom does to provide resources in financial literacy and recovery to survivors of gender-based violence so that they can rebuild their lives and thrive; and about FreeFrom’s upcoming Survivor Wealth Summit, the first of its kind, which will provide opportunities for attendees to redefine wealth and build new skills and tools to support their financial security.

Julie Schwietert Collazo is the co-founder and director of Immigrant Families Together (IFT). Immigrant Families Together is a grassroots collective founded in response to the zero tolerance immigration policy begun by the Trump administration in 2018 that has resulted in the separation of thousands of immigrant parents and their children at the U.S./Mexico border. Since June 2018, Immigrant Families together has posted bond for 73 individuals and offered ongoing support— in the form of legal counsel, groceries, healthcare, transportation and more— to many of these individuals and a dozen additional families.

We talked about the need for women to share their proud moments and stories of achievement; about the harm and lasting impact of family separation and detention of asylum seekers on the U.S./Mexico Border; about the origin and daily work of Immigrant Families Together; and about the need for everyone to find ways to plug into an issue that matters to them so we can work for collective change.

Amy Irvin is the executive director of the New Orleans Abortion Fund and served as the first intake coordinator. She has worked at abortion clinics in New Orleans and Atlanta and earned her Master of Science in Social Work at the University of Louisville where she researched the impact of parental consent laws for minors at the ACLU of Kentucky Reproductive Freedom Project.

We spoke about abortion access, reproductive justice, the importance of sharing stories about abortion, recent bans and proposed legislation in Louisiana and beyond, and the ongoing work and mission of the New Orleans Abortion Fund.

Dr. Yaba Blay is a New Orleans native, distinguished homegirl, content creator, cultural worker, professor and producer of Professional Black Girl. As a researcher and ethnographer, Dr. Blay uses personal and social narratives to disrupt fundamental assumptions about cultures and identities. As a cultural worker, she uses image to inform consciousness, incite dialogue, and inspire others into action and transformation.

Dr. Blay spoke about the beginnings and evolution of the Professional Black Girl hashtag, community, and web series; her recent tour to Historically Black Colleges and Universities with friend, colleague, and #metoo founder Tarana Burke; the persistent harm of white supremacy and the power of Black culture, creation, and community in New Orleans.
