Illegal Dumping, and Fearing for Your Life, in Kanesatake

Illegal Dumping, and Fearing for Your Life, in Kanesatake

Chris and Isaac are back together for this week's FIRE episode of the Midnight Choir.
Chris has been doing an extensive investigation into illegal dumping in Kanesatake Mohawk territory west of Montreal on the shores of Lac des Deux Montagnes. In this week's episode, he explains the legwork he's been doing, the issues he has encountered, and what he's uncovered so far.
He also provides some vital context about the community and the ongoing effects of colonization that it continues to grapple with, which is what's permitting this large-scale contamination of Indigenous land. What's next? Chris dives deep and Isaac sits in shock and horror for a long time.
This is a complement to our reporting on this issue. Here are our latest articles on the subject: https://therover.ca/dump-site-openly-flaunts-provincial-law/  https://therover.ca/in-kanesatake-our-land-has-been-traumatized/

Leaving Zionism Behind with Jess Salomon

Leaving Zionism Behind with Jess Salomon

On this week's episode of The Midnight Choir, human rights lawyer-turned-comedian Jess Salomon blesses the podcast with her unique voice. She shares her unique experience of being raised as a Zionist, going into law, discovering her queerness and making the switch to comedy — and getting married to a Palestinian woman along the way. She's now unpacking Zionism for followers on her Substack in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the ensuing war in Gaza, which she gets into with Chris and Isaac in this episode. We talk about the history of Zionism, what Anti-Semitism is (and isn't), and how to engage with Zionist talking points.

Abolishing the Police with Ted Rutland

Abolishing the Police with Ted Rutland

Is it time we started to consider changing how we view policing? This week we're joined by Associate Professor Ted Rutland, who researches urban politics, planning and policing at Concordia University. We talk about the function the police serve in our society, how to envision violence prevention and response without the police, and why the SPVM recently intervened at the pro-Palestine encampment set up by students at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) but not at the one set up on McGill University's campus.

Immigration and Language in Quebec (With Antonine Yaccarini) Part II

This is part 2 of our interview with Antonine Yaccarini, a political analyst and former head of communications for the Parti Québécois, not to mention a prominent voice for an independent Quebec. We talk about immigration, how hard it is to learn French, and Quebec's nationhood alongside Indigenous people. Antonine also shares her experience as a woman in politics, and Chris and Isaac dunk on angryphones.

Should Quebec Separate, and is Bill 21 Immoral? (With Antonine Yaccarini) Part I

This week the Midnight Choir talks to Antonine Yaccarini, a political analyst who worked in communications for the Parti Québécois for over a decade. We went into this knowing Antonine, Chris and Isaac wouldn't always agree. So let's dive deep! Enjoy this part 1 of a two-part discussion between three very different thinkers.
