The Modesty Files
Welcome to The Modesty Files! In this podcast, we’re diving into the world of Christian fundamentalism and interviewing women who have left their churches. Our podcast's goal is to "uncover" their experiences and provide a safe space for women to make sense of their complicated past and reflect on their journey toward recovery. Good information

The first show was fascinating and contained some very useful information about the Quiverfull movement. I do hope you are planning to have more episodes because the interviewers ask excellent questions and allow the guest to speak openly about their experiences.
Can We Please Stop?
12/02/2022
Great podcast and interviewers. Important and fascinating topics. I’m addressing the few bad reviews for this that I’ve seen: Can we please stop shaming women for using their natural voices? Culture shapes how people talk. You can’t just unlearn the life long cultural training of how you speak because you have a podcast. Plus, lots of these women (including the hosts) were (obviously) raised in/joined groups that put a lot of pressure on traditional gender roles and taught females to speak in certain ways. Stop shaming people for who they are. It is rare that I see a podcast voiced by me. where they are shamed for how they talk.
Immature
21/05/2022
The host is highly immature and the guests often are equally as immature. No depth and essentially making fun of church norms across the board while celebrating ridiculously immature responses to purposeful parenting or leadership within a religious organization. Kind of stupid. In addition, the host needs to please stop talking like she’s a sorority girl trying to sound grownup. Falling flat.
Interesting Perspectives

I wasn’t raised in a Christian home but am a Jesus follower. I think I’ve known people along the way with stories like this who’s parents were well intentioned and afraid of the “world”. It’s sad that Christianity is often taught Jesus + a laundry list of rules… I’m grateful I was not exposed to these cultish practices because it sounds pretty awful. The only reason I’m not giving this a 5 is because this seems especially focused on the one Gothard movement (and there are so many to explore) and seems like most of these testimonies represent white experiences (and there are many other cultures who are preyed on by these teachings). It’s important to hear from many different voices bc I think race and culture play a big part in how people are pulled in. Granted, this Gothard movement seems to be very white nationalistic so perhaps that’s why, but I’d like to hear from others perspectives as these stories start to sound the same after a while.
