Why "Having It All" Is Possible—But Isn't Worth It

Why "Having It All" Is Possible—But Isn't Worth It

There’s an expectation on women that we should be constantly striving to “have it all.” But as the pandemic laid bare, “having it all” usually just means “doing it all,” and doing it all...just doesn't work.
Samhita Mukhopadhyay, former Executive Editor of Teen Vogue and author of The Myth of Making It: A Workplace Reckoning, joins me this week for an honest conversation about where we go from here—and what type of reckoning our workplaces and family lives face as women respond to structures that no longer make (never made?) sense.

If You’re Not in the Top 10%, the “Economy” in Headlines Isn’t Yours

If You’re Not in the Top 10%, the “Economy” in Headlines Isn’t Yours

You might be familiar with the phrase, "In this economy?" But it turns out, there might be more than one "economy" out there. There's a deep disconnect between what we hear about in the headlines ("The economy is great!") and our day-to-day experiences affected by wage stagnation, inflation, and high interest rates. We dig into it with the help of Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody's Analytics, as well as Judd Cramer, from the Harvard department of economics.

Richer by Association

I just wanted to say thank you to Katie and everyone that participates in the creation of this show. I’m 43 and have $100,000 in student loan debt and only earned $24,000 last year through working a full time job , a part time job, and teaching a few yoga classes as a side hustle. I’m also in graduate school with 2 years left (meaning more student loans to come). I have no retirement, no investments, and no credit cards. I do not enjoy my life as it is.

Listening to this podcast has helped me better understand the mechanism of my personal financial situation as it relates to larger concepts. I’ve been living in the American Dream that seems to fuel class separation — “You can have stability and happiness if you just work hard enough”. Katie’s delivery of the info makes it palatable and digestible . To the extent that I’ve begun to learn more on my own and have made a few decisions to realign my financial path with what’s actually available to me right now. I don’t think I could have done that if I hadn’t come across this podcast.

I’ve never been more obsessed with a show

I came across Money with Katie after her collab with Kate Kennedy and I fell deeply and madly in love with this podcast. I recently graduated with my PhD and have loved this practical education about money now that I’m making more than 25k as a grad student (yay). Money with Katie has taught me so much about wealth building, taxes, and investments while giving me time to think about my own financial goals for by myself and my growing family. Could not recommend this podcast more for both those who are starting from square one in their personal finance journey and those who are already in deep. Very delighted to have discovered the Rich Girls and Boys community!
