065: Breaking with tradition to transcend limitations w/Christina Dick, Founder of TFB Agency

If you're in need of some inspiration, this is your episode! We're chatting with Christina Dick, Founder of the Public Relations Agency: Tiramisu for Breakfast and Adjunct Professor of Advertising at VCU. Christina's positive energy and plethora of #truthbombs will make you feel like you can tackle everything on your to-do list. This conversation is full of magic like the power of being underestimated and sliding in under the radar, the frustrations of feeling limited within a role and the freedom and creativity that emerges when creating your own rules in your own business, framing all experiences as opportunities to learn and grow, and highlighting the positives of social media. Christina shares her biggest fears jumping into entrepreneurship and the gifts and surprises that have come from being her own boss.  We learn why it's important to "obsess over your customers and not your competitors", that "everyone you meet knows something you don't", and that "you can always lose something you have, but you can never lose something you are". Christina shares her down to earth approach on business and encourages us to consider our intention behind every action and interaction. Tune in now! 062: How to reconnect to your joy within your chosen profession w/Dr. Janet West, Founder of RVA Baby

In this day and age of public systems failing those served, we are fortunate enough to hear from a woman who is creating more light in the medical world. This week we hear from Dr. Janet West, a Richmond, VA pediatrician and the founder of RVA Baby. RVA Baby is a comprehensive holistic newborn care practice designed to support families after they welcome a new baby into their family. Having practiced military medicine, worked as a hospitalist, and achieved an MBA with ambitions to run various hospitals, Dr. West speaks to her WHY as to create her own business. We learn it is not only patients frustrated with the current medical system, but most bottom-line run medical offices cheat practitioners out of practicing medicine in the ways that they'd hoped. Rather than leaving the field, Dr. West tells us she thought about what it was about medicine that she loved and pondered how she could make healthcare delivery more family friendly; thus, creating RVA Baby. Dr. West walks us through her process to set up her business design, while normalizing newborn challenges for mamas and families. In addition to discussing rates, affordability, self-worth, and defining success, we also learn what holistic care can look like, how natural remedies can solve problems, and what the benefits are of having a pediatrician come to you in your first few months of postpartum. We are both inspired and educated by our conversation with Dr. West and are hopeful more medical doctors will create opportunities to make their practices more patient-friendly! FIND DR. 061: A conversation on making space for womxn w/Ali Greenberg, Founder of The Broad + Brand Strategist

Another week, another woman. We are joined this week by the inspirational Ali Greenberg, Founder of The Broad and Brand Strategist. Within a year, Ali envisioned and launched the Richmond, VA workspace and social club for womxn and gender minorities creating community, diverse conversation, and connections with the goal to be exclusively inclusive. Ali is transparent regarding her experience as a solo business founder and invites us into her thoughtful journey to create collaboratively with and for her community. This episode is as packed with business gems as it is with context for the necessity of creating space and opportunities for womxn and minorities. Ali shares her personal experience managing risk emotionally, when to outsource, how to create and sustain momentum when building a business, and the process that quickly transforms an idea into reality; while, simultaneously introducing us to the history of women's spaces and the current climate of Richmond's Art District where The Broad is located.  Ali pushes us to acknowledge the importance of becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable conversations regarding race, segregation, and gender disparities to move the city and its economy forward. We consider the difference between being progressive versus being inclusive with regard to the distinction between "RVA" and "Richmond". We discuss how we might create communities without becoming "charismatic cult leaders", and so much more! Tune in now to learn more about Ali's change driving entrepreneurial tactics and what's ahead for The Broad and Richmond, VA.
