321 episodes

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

PRIDE MONTH: Esera Tuaolo Is The Only Openly Gay NFL Football Player

What if you were known as the NFL player with the voice of an angel and your reputation for making the ladies swoon was rivaled only by your reputation for making big plays on the football field?
Esera Tuaolo, proud Samoan, Hawaii native, Superbowl winner and contestant on The Voice, had everything that he’d ever dreamed of: A career playing the sport he loved, the ability to support his family and the respect of his peers and fans.
But what would you do if you had a secret? One so devastating that it would not only derail the career that you loved, but could also put a bounty on your head? Would you redouble your efforts to keep your truth hidden? Or would you relieve yourself of your burden and tell your story to the world?

PRIDE MONTH: Travis Coles Is The Only One Explaining Why ALL Black Lives Matter

PRIDE MONTH: Travis Coles Is The Only One Explaining Why ALL Black Lives Matter

All Black Lives Matter came on my radar last week after it was painted down the center of Hollywood Blvd here in Los Angeles. The issue on the table is that black queer people in this country have been hit twice. Being black and queer in America can be seen as a double threat and not necessarily in a good way. Many black members of the LGBTQ+ community feel like a people without a country. They experience racism within the LGTBTQ+ community and they experience prejudice and homophobia from straight, cisgender members of the black community. And now that the George Floyd protests and Pride month are erupting at the same time, where do our Queer black people stand? How do you know which identifier to fight for first? Black or Queer?
Travis Coles is an actor, comedian, air force brat born in Germany and then raised in Texas, DC and Maryland. He still looks great in lederhosen. He attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and began his improv training after moving to Los Angeles.

On My Nightstand: Black Boy Out of Time by Hari Ziyad

Today’s reading is an excerpt from chapter seven, Guilt and Gods by the critically acclaimed writer and editor, Hari Ziyad.
Hari Ziyad is a cultural critic, a screenwriter, and the editor-in-chief of RaceBaitr. They are a 2021 Lambda Literary Fellow, and their writing has been featured in BuzzFeed, Out, the Guardian, Paste magazine, and the academic journal Critical Ethnic Studies, among other publications. Previously they were the managing editor of the Black Youth Project and a script consultant on the television series David Makes Man. Hari spends their all-too-rare free time trying to get their friends to give the latest generation of R & B starlets a chance and attempting to entertain their always very unbothered pit bull mix, Khione.

Wowza

Laura and Scott have the most welcoming and warm atmosphere for their podcast! I absolutely love listening to guests as Laura has them open up about their ‘only one’ experiences. Everybody has something that makes them feel othered and this podcast is truly a space to feel and breed that acceptance our world so desperately needs.

I love listening to Laura’s calming voice and completely adorning laugh(:
