American Democracy is not promised to us and, with all the forces working against it, saving it will take a level of work most people aren’t ready for. The Politics Girl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? Subscribe for new episodes every Tuesday. We’re in a fight for our country. We sure as hell better know what we’re fighting for. xo

Women are Furious: A Conversation with the new President of Emily’s List Jessica Mackler

Women are Furious: A Conversation with the new President of Emily’s List Jessica Mackler

Fixing the crisis America is in is hard, but it’s also simple. We can’t stop talking about reproductive rights because it’s not just about stripping women of the right to manage their own lives and bodies, it’s about the slippery slope we find ourselves on if we accept that government can just take our essential human rights. At the end of the day, it’s not just about abortion, it’s about precedent. If they can take this freedom, what’s next? Emily’s List is out here fighting back, which is why I’m pleased to speak to known strategist and fighter Jessica Mackler. Emily’s List isn’t just about winning elections at every level, but to supporting those winners once they’re in office.Government is simply better when all voices are at the table. It took almost 50 years for them to strip us of our rights. If we vote correctly, we can get them back in two.

Get Your House in Order America: A Conversation with Democratic congresswoman and Minority Whip Katherine Clark

Get Your House in Order America: A Conversation with Democratic congresswoman and Minority Whip Katherine Clark

The Republicans are telling us their plans for America’s future and it is terrifying. The Democrats, in contrast, are vocally offering the opposite. Where the last Democratic House was the most effective in modern American history, passing more legislation passed than any Congress since FDR’s New Deal, the current Republican House has been the least effective, least cohesive since the Civil War. The American people deserve better than obstructionists playing games with our time and money. We are joined today by Minority Whip Katherine Clark, to hear an insider perspective on the 118th Congress and why returning power to the grown ups in the room in so essential to the success of our nation. Absolutely worth your time.

College Campus Crisis: A Conversation with David Rothkopf

College Campus Crisis: A Conversation with David Rothkopf

I’ve been watching what’s been happening on college campuses with real uncertainty. I don’t believe we’re getting the full story from the media. Much like the horserace neck and neck BS they’re peddling for the election, I feel as if traditional media is pushing narratives with the protests that don’t tell the full picture and it leaves people feeling outraged or confused. As today’s guest David Rothkopf says, “If you want this crisis to be simple, you’re looking in the wrong place. It’s not simple. It’s difficult and it requires grown-ups who have a sense of history and the ability to weigh different and competing ideas at the same time.” As David so aptly points out, our tendency to be tribal has turned these conflicts on college campuses into a Rorschach test where we often end up seeing what we want to see. As Robert Reich said, “There should be nothing inherently anti-Semitic about condemning the ongoing destruction in Gaza”. And yet…that is not how it’s always playing out. So let’s talk about it.

They Don’t Care if we Die: A Conversation with President of Reproductive Freedom for All Mini Timmaraju

They Don’t Care if we Die: A Conversation with President of Reproductive Freedom for All Mini Timmaraju

Today we’re joined by Mini Timmaraju, President of Reproductive Freedom for All, to discuss how reproductive freedom isn’t just about access to the health care of abortion, but about how we think society should function. Do we believe our most fundamental and personal decisions belong to the government, or do we believe they belong to us? At the end of the day, it all comes back to democracy, and if our voices are heard and respected, or we’re controlled and silenced. We, as a country, have to fight for our right to control our own lives while we still can, and we have to vote in numbers that leave no question as to what kind of country the majority of us want to live in. I truly believe this issue isn’t about being Republican or Democrat. It’s about being American, and the values and freedoms we believe this country should represent.

The Goldilock’s Economy: A Conversation with economist Michael Mezzatesta

The Goldilock’s Economy: A Conversation with economist Michael Mezzatesta

It’s not that everything that’s happened in capitalism is bad, but when it comes to economics, perhaps we should be asking what this endless growth means and for whom? Who is all this growth for, and what is it worth, if it really only benefits a tiny silver of our population. What if there was a Goldilocks version of the economy? Where it wasn’t communism, and it wasn’t winner take all capitalism, but something in between that benefits all of us and works within the limits of our planet? Maybe it’s time for a new way of doing things. This is clearly unsustainable.

This is How Countries End: A Conversation about veterans taking up arms against America with Ken Harbaugh

This is How Countries End: A Conversation about veterans taking up arms against America with Ken Harbaugh

Membership in violent extremist organizations is up, especially with our veterans. Today we talk to former mission commander and veteran’s advocate Ken Harbaugh about his incredible film Against All Enemies, and why a disproportionate amount of our military veterans would end up taking violent action against the very country they swore to protect, and why they would think they were patriots for doing it. We talk about this spectacular film that leaves you with a true understanding of where we sit with this violent extremist movement in America. Absolutely worth your time.

Disappointed

I will never give this podcast less than five stars because Leigh is amazing and researches her topics thoroughly. But, the episode with David Rothkopf was disappointing (the guest was top notch!). When I was listening to the episode about Israel and Gaza, all I could hear was Leigh going back to Jewish people being bullied or the rise in antisemitism (which is unacceptable, of course). She didn’t mention-or maybe I missed it-the rise in Islamophobia or the attacks on the students by men AND women who are spitting on them and yelling that they hope the students get r*ped. I truly appreciated her guest, David Rothkopf, who kept the topic from becoming too one sided and was informative. I admire Leigh A LOT but was just taken aback at her bias in this episode.

Have been able to sleep in the last seven days!

Thank you for last week’s pod- Trump's America: AGENDA 47 A conversation with Ahmed Baba!

I think people know a second Trump term would be horrible BUT it wasn’t until I heard the words verbatim, with your explanation of how horrific it would be, that I truly got it! Though overwhelmed, I have a better sense that I need to get the word out but am still not sure how or where to start…

I wonder why only a very small few of my favorite podcasters and news pundits are not laying it down like you have?! If it IS getting said, it’s said with a spoonful of sugar. The way you and Mr. Baba presented it is how we need to hear it; everyday, as a unified front, and with the same urgency!

On another note, we are kidding ourselves if we are missing the connection to all these SCOTUS cases that have either stripped away or all but diminished laws pertaining

to, a woman’s and/or family’s right to choice, race, immigration, prayer, the environment, and trans-gender and gay rights and the 2025, Schedule F, and Agenda 47!

None of this works without BIG money and people behind the scenes pulling Trump’s strings that are undergirding this!

Providing a Different Perspective

I loved the show interviewing Greg Jackson of the White House Gun Violence Prevention Program. Some days every podcast is covering the same thing. But this is information I would not hear anywhere else. It’s important to hear both about the serious problem of gun violence but also hear the research and how that is being translated into effective action. Plus highlighting the actual positive work coming out of the Biden Administration is so important right now. Thank you.
