I came over to this podcast because I love Tom’s video content. I’ve never read the Harry Potter books but I also don’t live under a rock so I thought I’d give it a try. Currently I listen to like 3 episodes a day. I should probably cut back.

The Casual Misogyny is Off-Putting

The two can be funny at times but ruin it often with their casual misogyny. Men being misogynistic when they’re together doing a podcast (or really anything else) is far too normalized. Tom calling Molly Weasley lazy for being a stay-at-home mom and presumed homeschool teacher for the past 20 (or however old Bill was by the second book) years straight seemed like one of those insulting jokes that’s just someone saying what they genuinely believe but with humorous delivery. Like Ricky Gervais when he hosted the Golden Globes. Or when mean kids tease a classmate for being overweight. People treat anything they can categorize as a “joke” as absolved of malice so I had to point that out to counter the inevitable “it’s just a joke” defense. To Tom and Lucas it’s a harmless (and presumably in their minds, accurate) assessment and dig of a fictional character, but Molly represents real SAHMs and the dig was against women in her position - traditional moms whose kids go to school. Tom’s mentality of implicitly not respecting female carers, and devaluing their work, and maligning them as lazy, is very real and prevalent in our world. Both hosts have casually referred to mothers/mums as the ones responsible for childcare and domestic labor but seem to unconsciously look down on them and that role. It’s such an illogical and cruel and arrogant and common thing for men to devalue and ridicule and have hostility over the role that THEY often force onto women (sometimes violently) yet also demand of women (even when they do have a paying job). This male mindset is largely what led to the inception of feminism. I’m offended because it’s hurtful and harmful thinking for the hosts to have absorbed and be spreading. Namely Tom, but Lucas didn’t pushback.
