Stanley Larsen, Legendary Hot Dog Skier

Stanley Larsen, Legendary Hot Dog Skier

Stanley Larsen was one of the original Hot Doggers. Known for his loose contest runs that earned him titles like Canadian National Champion, French Freestyle Champion, Swiss Aerial Champion, and European Champion, Stanley was so much more than a contest guy. Fifty years before the Nimbus Crew existed, Stanley Larsen was looked at as the first skier to look at the mountain like a blank canvas and make art with his skiing. And when his skiing was done, Stanley made art in Hollywood, directing Super Bowl commercials and more. On the podcast, we talk about his counterculture roots, Dick Barrymore, Warren Miller, The Marlboro Tour, the death of hotdog skiing, and more. These history lessons are important and not to be missed.
    Stanley Larsen Show Notes:
5:00:  Saving lives, unbelievable Stanley skills, growing up in Seattle in the bike business.
10 :00:  Getting into skiing through a church he never went inside, racing, counterculture Stanley, and he was going to be a pro skier

49:00:  Marlboro Tour, going to Iran with Dick Bass and a Rockefeller to solve Utah’s transportation problems, and being a celebrity
56:00:  Assignment K2, the Clambin scene, the differences between Dick and Warren, transitioning to being  behind the lens

Mike Marolt, Ski Mountaineer, US Ski Hall of Fame Member

While Mike Marolt is a US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Member and a badass ski mountaineer, he never really had a pro ski career. He makes his money as a CPA. Ski-wise, Mike did so many incredible things, at high altitudes-without using oxygen, sherpa, or drugs, but he was always treated like Rodney Dangerfield. He and his crew never got the respect they deserved. On the podcast, we talk about the Marolt family roots in Aspen, his identical twin brother, college baseball, and his incredible resume full of American firsts in ski descents, and more.
    Mike Marolt Show Notes:
5:00:  Hunter S. Thompson’s rocket, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Jordan, and his dad, the Olympian
12:00:  Aspen’s dark event, having an identical twin, Independence Pass in the summer with his dad, and the Aspen School District Outdoor Education Program and trip
22:15:  Best Day Brewing:  All of the flavor of your favorite IPA or Kolsch, without the alcohol, the calories, and sugar.
Elan Skis:  Over 75 years of innovation that makes you better
24:15:  Climbing at Kastle Peak at least 300 times, Jeeps, and being a clean-cut, church-going kid who drank beer
37:00:  College baseball, studying accounting, the unwritten rules of climbing from his era, Denali, Logan, and learning how to suffer
38:00:  Stanley:  Get 30% off sitewide with the code drinkfast
Peter Glenn Ski and Sports:  Over 60 years of getting you out there
40:00:  First trip to Asia with Ed Viesturs, his first time above 20,000 feet, and  Ed inspiring him to bring skis on future trips
49:00:  Not cool enough for big-time ski or climbing sponsorships, getting enough hate online that there was a betting pool against them living through Shishapangma, and people questioning him (and his group) being the first North American to ski an 8000-meter peak
55:00:  Going got Everest with a chip on their shoulder, how not getting it impacted them, climbing, Choy Oyo pure style and Everest not fully pure style, and then his thoughts on supplemental oxygen (which he doesn’t use)
67:00:  Not bring his skis on the summit bid, getting stuck in lines, and then getting cold and turning around

Great Podcast

Mike, love the podcast, have been listening since I found “sponsored” a few years ago. I have ventured out and listened to a few of the other podcasts like TPM, most of the time can’t make it through an episode. The others tend to talk way too much, and unfortunately about themselves taking away from the athlete they are talking to. You really let them get their story out, well done. As a midwesterner who spent a year in Squaw many years ago and awaits our annual trip to the mountains, I really enjoy listening to your podcast and the stories surrounding this sport we all love. Thank You!

Best Ski Podcast

What better of a way to take your mind off skiing while at work, by listening to a ski podcast at work! Mike has the ability to show how human these athletes are, he makes them feel approachable and I like that. Mostly I believe this is due to his interviewing skills he keeps the humor alive while asking a lot of hard and at times personal questions and I doubt these athletes would be willing to answer those
question if it was someone other than Mike.
