Ski Binding Design with Hoji, Lars Chickering-Ayers, & Giray Dadali
At Blister Summit 2023, we brought together Hoji (Dynafit), Lars Chickering-Ayers (CAST Touring), and Giray Dadali (Daymaker Touring) for an extremely interesting and important discussion on the past, present, and future of ski bindings. We get their thoughts on “acceptable use” for certain bindings; the “Age of Confusion” surrounding different binding designs; being “handcuffed by standards” and thinking about the binding / boot / ski interface as a whole; what we should (or should hope to) expect from bindings in the future, and much, much more.

Safeback SBX: A New Avalanche Survival System
If you spend any time — inbounds or in the backcountry — skiing or riding in avalanche terrain or near tree wells, then you need to listen to this episode. Because we’re talking about a new system designed to increase your chances of survival if buried in an avalanche or tree well: the Safeback SBX. Our guest is Tor Berge, the CEO of the Norwegian company, Safeback, and Tor and I have a wide ranging conversation about avy gear in general, while also diving deep into the development process of their SBX system and exactly how it works. There’s lots of good food for thought in this one.

Powder Ski Design w/ Folsom's Mike McCabe
Today we’re talking about skis built for the deepest of days, the ones we dream about — and the kind that Mike McCabe and Jonathan Ellsworth were fortunate enough to ski recently in Alaska. And if you’ve ever heard someone say, “All skis are great in pow,” well, they’re here to blow up that notion. So what design elements work best in deep snow? What about low-angle terrain vs. steeper terrain? How wide is too wide? Is a softer flex pattern better? They discuss all of this and more.

Heritage labs - episode 226
Nice Frost reference! It made that episode my favorite podcast ever!
Zipfits are THE BEST
I can’t believe that Jeff said “boot manufacturers don’t consider leg and foot morphology when they design a liner” (at 9:42). What a stupid statement. They have to consider morphology in more carefully then designing a Zipfit because of the fact that the cork in a Zipfit will conform to just about any shaped foot/ lower leg. I’ve been fitting ski boots for more then 40 years and selling Zipfits for over 20 years. (We are the 3rd largest Zipfit in the US and we a city shop) As evidence to this fact, once I accidentally put two left Zipfits on a customer’s feet and the customer could not tell any difference. He loved them! I did not discover the problem until the very end of the selling process. And it’s all because the cork has such a tremendous ability to conform to just about any shaped foot, even a right foot in a left liner. There is no way you could do that with a stock liner. I love how Johnathon picked up on Jeff’s statement and asked Kara to be the “devil’s advocate”, but she totally soft peddled it. Jonathon should have just called out Jeff’s completely retarded statement. I’m definitely not ragging on Zipfits. I think they are absolutely THE BEST product in all of skiing and have told Sven that more then once! Thanks Gary Helm of Sun Valley ski shop San Mateo, CA PS. I ordered the Fischer RC4 Zipfit so that I could check out the Zipfit. And I was happy to see that it is actually better than stock Zipfits. 1) the laces are thinner. 2) the lace lock is much more sophisticated 3) they have a removable Velcro rear spoiler 4) they’ve removed the liner power strap 5) everything else is the same
Deep Dive on Bootfitting...Totally
When I saw the episodes about bootfitting I was excited because I had horrible fitting boots for years. So, like I listened to the first two episodes with Kara and Sam and I have to say it was totally great. Like totally. Like they gave out like a lot of super impor-ant information and it was like hard to describe how like totally informing it was. I like learned a lot of like totally impor-ant things that I've never known about bootfitting so it was totally worth my time. I mean totally worth it. I would like highly recommend anyone that's like totally interested in like bootfitting to like totally listen to it.
