20: Ambar Vidals - Child of Immigrants, Learning How to Fly, Making a Difference

20: Ambar Vidals - Child of Immigrants, Learning How to Fly, Making a Difference

"He was 87 and she was 83. They had been together since he was 18 and she was 15. They did everything for our family. My grandpa was a campesino. He was your typical Mexican grandfather - a bit old school but that’s just because the culture was different when he was growing up. He came from a working-class family and did not really have something to lean back on and I guess that’s what made him come here. He saw the US as a better opportunity not just for him but for his children. Losing them during quarantine was difficult but I am sure they are in a better place. [...] Being a child of immigrants, I recognize why they do it. They do it to provide a better future for the children. There’s this quote by Damian Leon which says “Immigrant parents, with their wings cut still teach their children to fly”. That’s what my parents and grandparents did for me. [...] I think there’s a lot of work to be done still to help children of immigrants and I hope that I can contribute to it. I see my life as a way to help people and especially the generations to come. I’m inspired by people like my grandpa. When I am 80 years old and look back, I hope I am able to say that I made a difference - for me, that’s enough."

19: Franck Ouattara - Pan African Upbringing, Going Back to the Roots, Leaving a Legacy

19: Franck Ouattara - Pan African Upbringing, Going Back to the Roots, Leaving a Legacy

In the nineteenth episode of The Power of Good Intentions, Aliou Sidibe dives into the story of Franck Ouattara who is a Research Analyst at the IMF.

Today’s guest is coming to us from Washington DC. He is one of my closest friends, brother, and someone that I look up to. It is often said that you can know someone’s value by how they treat others. I’ve known him for close to 15 years and I have never seen him get in conflict with someone. He is one of the most humble, respectful, and thoughtful people I know.

But what is more fascinating about him, is his life’s story and his drive to make an impact on the African continent.

His story shows growth through the generations and a strong dedication for a cause that is bigger than himself.

He founded a startup called Bright future which helps provide LED pens to kids in West Africa. He is filled with a strong passion for the continent and has dreams of fighting inequalities that are taking place over there.

Today, he works as a Research Analyst in the International Monetary Fund out of DC. He focuses on solving some of the growth challenges some African economies are facing.

18: Brandon Lyons - American Hero; Making History With Team USA; Hard Work, Resilience and Determination

18: Brandon Lyons - American Hero; Making History With Team USA; Hard Work, Resilience and Determination

In the eighteenth episode of The Power of Good Intentions, Aliou Sidibe dives into the story of Brandon Lyons who is a the first ever Full-Time Resident Hand Cyclist in Team USA History.

    Team USA Profile:

“Following graduation from Penn State University in 2012, Brandon Lyons began his career with the professional services firm of Ernst & Young (EY) in the greater Washington, D.C. area. During his first year as a consultant for the Big 4 firm, Lyons was recognized as the Supply Chain Rookie of the Year. His professional career was off to a great start, but that would quickly change. On May 24, 2014, Lyons dove into shallow water breaking his T5/T6 vertebrae and leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Lyons quickly took on this new challenge and returned to work at EY just four months after his accident, and even completed a marathon just five months after the date of his injury. He relocated to San Diego in 2016 to be closer to an advanced rehabilitation gym, which is where he found his passion for handcycling. He was introduced to former Ironman world champion David Bailey, and the two would ride the coast of southern California together as Bailey pushed Lyons to go faster. In March 2017, Lyons would be invited to a tryout at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center to earn a spot in the residence program. Lyons was awarded a spot as the first handcyclist in the residence program and would relocate to Colorado Springs, Colorado exactly three years after the date of his injury on May 24, 2017. Lyons made his first national team in 2019 and continues to work for EY.”

In today’s episode, we talked about the challenges he faced and the mindset that helped him overcome those challenges. I am excited for you all to hear it and as always, I’d love to hear from you after you listen.
