Today’s Christians and conservatives are largely unaware of the extent of the suffering of blacks in American History, from slavery to Jim Crow to the 1960s and even to today. They are largely unaware how systematic it was and what institutions were created specifically to maintain the injustices. Christians are largely unaware that their own clergy and churches were among the leading proponents of the systems, and have no idea of the convicting and sad reasons why, or of the theological justifications employed for turning a blind eye to the injustice, or worse, active perpetuation of it. That such theologies are still widely taught today—and are in some cases the norm—is not a good sign when so many social ills still surround a silent church. In general, Christians and conservatives are not nearly as informed as they may think when it comes to understanding black history in the United States and the black saga it contains. The Problem of Slavery in Christian America aims at providing otherwise well-intended Christians and conservatives a deeper understanding of that history, a starting point for discussion and, if necessary, repentance, and with a biblical response to the larger problem of racism, all while refusing to capitulate to non-Christian leftism.

The half has never been told...

I knew it was bad but I did not know how far reaching this time in American history was and just how desperate America was to keep the institution even after it was abolished. This was accomplished through a plethora of laws that essentially kept it alive.

I’m glad I listened to this audiobook. I’m looking forward to Joel’s book that he thought he was writing when this was uncovered (criminal justice/reform). It will be a great follow up to this and I can see just how foundational this book is to any talk on modern criminal justice.

Excellent study on the evolution of American law and slavery

This audio is a powerful and fact based review on how American colonists and later independent America adjusted its laws to fit its penchant for greed at the cost of black folks. The excellent storytelling makes for an easy visual understanding of the suffering slaves endured as well as how they fought back. This story should be told in every school in America.

Insightful and convicting

It’s difficult if not impossible to see the errors of today if we don’t understand the sins of yesterday. This book offers an honest and fair look at the sins of our theological forefathers and how Justice and mercy was tossed aside. Important work from Dr. Mcdurmon.
