    S1E7: Human Equity Consciousness — with Mehcad Brooks

    Meet Mehcad Brooks. Mehcad is an award winning actor, as well as producer and writer, known in the entertainment industry for his raw talent and sharp mind. Earlier this year, Mehcad starred as Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, a cybernetically-enhanced super soldier and leader of Earthrealm in Warner Bros’ highly anticipated action adventure feature film Mortal Kombat. As well as Mortal Kombat, Mehcad’s been in a whole host of brilliant films including Tyler Perry’s A Fall From Grace and Nobody’s Fool – and he’s shone on the television front in Desperate Housewives, True Blood and most recently in the DC Comic Superhero action-adventure series, Supergirl. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Mehcad grew up excelling at academics and sports, but always had a deep-rooted passion for the arts (in fact, he gave up a full scholarship to Yale in order to hone his craft). A natural-born storyteller, we are so excited to have Mehcad on The Progressivists Podcast where - amongst many things – we’re going to talk about racial and intersectional equity in the entertainment industry and how what we watch on the screen has the potential to bolster equality and empathy.

    S1E6: America's Gun Epidemic – with Shannon Watts

    Today's guest is Shannon Watts. Shannon is a mother-of-five and the founder of the U.S.'s largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence, 'Moms Demand Action'. With its more than six million supporters, 'Moms Demand Action' volunteers have stopped the NRA's priority legislation in statehouses more than 90 percent of the time, and helped pass hundreds of gun safety laws across the country. In fact, Shannon’s been described as "the NRA's worst nightmare". In 2019, Shannon wrote a book, 'Fight Like a Mother', which is an inspiring story of how her rallying call-to-action grew into a powerful movement to protect children from gun violence, offering lessons for others who want to make a difference in their community - and in this episode of 'The Progressivists Podcast' we talk to Shannon about America's Gun Epidemic and what regular Americans can do to thwart this ongoing heartbreak.

    Meet Saira Rao . . . Saira is a lawyer-by-training; a former congressional candidate; co-founder of Race2Dinner, the dinner party experience aimed at enabling white women to confront their own racism; co-founder of Haven, the collective of BIPOC women rooted towards abolition, liberation and healing through art and storytelling; and also co-author of the upcoming book 'White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better' (released Fall 2022). Saira grew up in Virginia, USA, the daughter of Indian immigrants. For forty years, she wasted her very precious time aspiring to be accepted by a dominant white society, which Saira describes as a futile task for anyone not born with white skin. Several years ago, Saira began the painful process of dismantling her own internalized oppression — and on this episode of The Progressivists Podcast, she and host, Jo Lorenz, discuss the habits of white women that affect BIPOC women, and importantly, how we can move forward.     Leah Thomas is founder of the eco-lifestyle blog, Green Girl Leah – as well as the Intersectional Environmentalist platform, which is a resource and media hub that advocates for environmental justice and inclusivity. Leah is an eco-communicator and is deeply passionate about advocating for, and exploring the relationship between, social justice and environmentalism. She has been personally profiled in Harper’s Bazaar, W Magazine and GOOP – with her writing being featured in Vogue, Elle, and The Good Trade – yet most recently, her writing can be found in her upcoming book, 'The Intersectional Environmentalist', which is aimed at educating people on how to create inclusive and sustainable change. On this episode of The Progressivists Podcast we talk with Leah about intersectionality, environmental racism and climate optimism.
