Mendiolas Ballroom Flyer Series with Shawn Stern and Guest Host Alison Braun (1 of 3)

Shawn Stern of Youth Brigade  and BYO with guest host Alison Braun commence the first installment of The Punk Rock Chronicles flyer series.  This 3-episode series starts with a show that was held on February 11, 1983 at a venue called the Mendiolas Ballroom in Huntington Park.  One of the most violent punk rock riots during this era kicked off that evening.  Listen to our guest recall the craziness that ensued that evening from a perspective of being a promoter, playing and taking photos as this was part of Youth Movement 83.  There was a lot of promise of being a fun night of great music with an amazing lineup that included The Exploited, CH3, Youth Brigade, Vandals, Aggression, and Suicidal Tendencies.

    Coming up next
Episode 2 with guest host Alison Braun and Joe Escalante (The Vandals) with special appearance Eric VonArab (Vandals roadie that evening)
Episode 3 with guest host Alison Braun,  Mike Magrann and Kimm Gardener (CH3)

Mike Patton (Middle Class with guest host Casey Royer)

Mike Patton (Middle Class with guest host Casey Royer)

On this episode we talk to Mike Patton of the Orange County band, Middle Class.  Middle Class was one of the first bands from Southern California to play blistering fast punk rock. These young clean-cut Dr. Pepper- drinking guys played shows with bands like the Germs, Screamers, the Zeros and many other first wave punk rock bands. When they released their 7inch EP Out of Vogue, it made a huge impact on many new punk rockers in the scene.  Casey Royer of DI/Adolescents/Social Distortion was one of those youths impacted by this album, so we found it appropriate to have him guest host this episode.  Did you ever wonder how the band came up with their name or the story behind the Out of Vogue cover?  If so, sit back as these two punk rock legends talk about the old days.

    Christopher Rest (RKL/Lagwagon)

    Christopher Rest (RKL/Lagwagon)

Those kids will never live up to society’s expectations- they're just a bunch of Rich Kids on LSD! On this episode we talk to Christopher Rest, the guitarist for RKL and Lagwagon.  Christopher dives headfirst into how he got into playing music, the formation of RKL, and their crazy adventures during the 1980s.  He explains the evolution of RKL’s various lineup changes and covers how the recordings with Mystic Records and Epitaph came about.  Christopher also talks about the band’s low points during the 1980s and how things changed for the better after they returned from their second European tour, ultimately leading to their first breakup.  The 1990s were a rollercoaster ride for him given the reformation of RKL and how different versions of the group garnered mix reviews.  Finally, he covers how he was asked to join Lagwagon and where things are today post pandemic.  If you are a fan of NARDCORE, RKL and Lagwagon, this show is a mandatory listen for you.
