This week I am posting a podcast we actually did with Travis Macy over on his podcast. Travis is an adventure addict that has been on my show a couple times. He is the author of the book Ultra Mindset and has spent a lifetime training for adventure races of the highest caliber. This week we chat about Lifestyle design and how that has evolved for both of us as parents who also still have a big need to be adventurous and seek out the solo adventures.

Back in December we ran a pilot course with 25 students and it was awesome. We launched multiple businesses and the feedback was outstanding. I think people were blown away. When I first had the idea to launch the course I didn’t know whether to make it about starting a side hustle or just about entrepreneurship. Through teach those first 25 students I have realized that this is a course about how to make time and money. So so many would be entrepreneurs start a project only to realize they only started a job and freedom to hunt as much as they want is nowhere to be seen. This course is about choosing the right ideas and or pivoting from the wrong ones. My entire life has been build around how do I create an income that allows me to go do the things I love. I have made a pile mistakes along the way and I want to teach people like me how to avoid those potholes. If you are a interested in changing your life sign up at therichoutdoors.net/course if you use code TRO it’ll save you $50 bucks and for the first 50 people to sign up I will give you access to our Slack channel that we are calling the Rich Ideas Lab where you will get access to tons of ideas and a community of entrepreneurs.

EP 535: Western Bear Hunting with Joe Kondelis

Right after we recorded this I thought to myself; “We don’t do enough bear podcasts”. Bear hunting has been such a huge piece of hunting journey and honestly in retrospect I have more hunting memories with by buddies from hunting bears than probably any other hunts. It’s just fun!

This week I am joined by Joe Kondelis who would rather hunt bears than even elk and deer. A montana native that resides in Wyoming, Joe has hunted mountain black bears since before it was cool. Joe happens to also be the head of the Western Bear Foundation, a 501c3 for bears. We chat about bears and some of the many struggles that face the species across the west. We also talk about bear hunting and how most hunters think of bears as an after thought or a way to spend a little extra time in the spring.

We talk about different hunting methods across the country and even just across the west. We cover the impact of grizzly bears and how that is changing the black bear distribution. Western Bear Foundation is doing some great work and I love to see projects like this. I will be attending the upcoming Western Bear/ Wyoming Wildlife dinner this coming 29th of January in Cody Wyoming and I highly encourage anyone who wants to make the trip to join me. You can buy tickets here.

    Backcountry Fuel Holiday Sale

This week I am joined by the newly appointed Chairman of Colorado Bowhunters Association Henry Ferguson. To be honest we the pool of candidates must have been pretty slim to elect a guy with an IG handle called @bigchiefwhackabuck but who am I to judge…

Henry is a solid dude that has been on the podcast before and is a notorious big buck killer. In fact that’s why I wanted to get him on. In a state “overrun” with new hunters, he and his family seem to get it done on great animals every year. Henry will be the first to tell you he’s not trying to out hike everyone or go 10 miles in. He is consistent and knows what to look for. In this podcast we dive into some of the frameworks he uses on early and late season mule deer to be consistent. We also dive into advice for new hunters and how to avoid getting frustrated with all of the pressure.

As Chairman, Mr.Ferguson is dealing with some of the big changes the Colorado Commission is working on for the 2022 season. With the death of an archery hunter this year during the muzzleloader overlap, the state is looking into options to reduce this risk. One of the options on the table is a new hunter orange requirement for archery season. The Bowhunters Association would love your feedback as hunters on this and is asking you to take a quick survey. Please do them a favor and put in your thoughts here.

EP 533: November Velvet Bucks, September Big Bulls, and Tasty Porcupines

This week I catch up with the man himself Ryan Lampers. Ryan is one of the best hunters I know and this year was nothing short of a banner year for Lampers. This week we catch up on the season and some of his highs and lows. Ryan drew a Nevada elk tag this year and in true Lampers fashion he put in a ton of time on that mountain. We chat about what he learned watching elk from pre rut through full rut. This is very interesting to hear outside of just being a very good hunting story. Most of us spend a a week or 10 days and we can always well here is what I think happened, but Lampers watched the whole picture from start to finish. In his attempt to see every bull in the unit before making a decision Lampers learned a ton about elk behavior.

We also talk about the weird phenomenon that multiple people have commented on of seeing more and more velvet bucks while rifle hunting. We talk about Montana mule deer, and Ryan gives some tips to hunting with the Hawkins for the late season.  All in all a really great conversation with such a good human.

Ryan runs a live event every year called the Western Hunting Summit. These events are really really cool and one of the few high end events that has year after year return guests. This year will be at a new location and new speakers that will make this the best summit yet. These sell out quick so if you are interested claim your spot during presale. https://westernhuntingsummit.com/

Todays episode is made possible by Maven Optics an amazing Wyoming based optics company that I absolutely  love.  Whether you are in the market for rifle scopes or Bino’s Maven is the Company I would recommend hands down. I run the B series bino’s and in my opinion these are hands down the best bang for your buck. This year I got a pair of b.5 15×56’s and let me just say I am in love. I plan on using the b.5’s a lot this year. I have seen a been open country hunters who run only 15’s so I thought what the heck I’ll give it a try. I also just picked up an RS.3 rifle scope and will be using that on top of  my 300 HCA some rifle hunts. Maven makes really high quality stuff and for the price you can’t touch it. The one thing you will hear great hunters say over and over is invest in quality glass.  If you want to upgrade your hunting skills, head over to MavenBuilt .com and upgrade our glass. EP 532: Montana Heritage Season, Conservation, and Season Recaps with Jaden Bales

This week Jaden and I catch up on his recent elk hunt and my run at Montana mule Deer. You could probably sum up both hunts with sunset photos. All jokes aside, we talk about the highs and lows of November and the struggles of late season hunting. We also talk about the upcoming heritage season that Montana started and we touch on some ideas for tips and tactics. Personally I was excited to go look for a late season bull elk but now that my tag is notched I only have a Mule deer tag for the late season.

Just to cover our basis here is the link to the new Muzzleloader restrictions.

    Montana’s New Muzzleloader Heritage Season

    New Muzzleloader Season Rules

    *

Hunters can use plain lead projectiles and a muzzleloading rifle that is charged with loose black powder, loose Pyrodex, or an equivalent loose black powder substitute and ignited by a flintlock, wheel lock, matchlock, or percussion mechanism using a percussion or musket cap.

    *

During the muzzleloader season, hunters may not use a muzzleloading rifle that requires insertion of a cap or primer into the open breach of the barrel (inline), is capable of being loaded from the breech, or is mounted with an optical magnification device.

    *

The muzzleloading rifle must be a minimum of .45 caliber and may not have more than two barrels.

    *

Use of preprepared paper or metallic cartridges, sabots, gas checks, or other similar power and range-enhancing manufactured loads that enclose the projectile from the rifling or bore of the firearm is also prohibited.

    *

A person may take a deer or elk with a license or permit that is still valid at the end of the general hunting season.

EP 531: Hunting Fanatic and General Contractor Marcus Gores

Welcome to the pod, this week I am joined by Marcus Gores who just got done doing an amazing stone sheep hunt. Marcus is a hunting fanatic through and through we talk about his journey and his desire to travel to new places experiencing hunts and the adventure it leads them on. In this podcast Marcus shares his adventures of his two brutal sheep hunts. We talk about his wife getting into hunting and how that has changed his perspective, and we talk about the reality of burnout.

Marcus has been on some crazy hunts and one would think he has spent a small fortune. For me it was cool to hear that he is a general contractor who works hard and plays hard. Marcus also has not only plays his cards very well when getting tags though raffles but he also talks about putting in some serious work on the phones to capitalize on other opportunities that most don’t or just won’t. A great conversation, and I hope you all enjoy.

Great information

Great information and a very impressive list of guests. A humble suggestion, limit the interruptions and allow your guests to finish. That’s the only area I see for improvement.

Great podcast for your typical hunter

I am your average eastern hunter who has always dreamed of hunting out west. Listening to this podcast has given me invaluable information on making these dreams reality! Headed to Wyoming this August-September for Antelope and Mule deer and I feel more prepared for this hunt from what I’ve learned here. Will be recommending to all my hunting buddies👍
