Radical Sacred

Remember, you are on sacred ground. Stay rooted. For two years Jenny Misslin and Rev. Phil Dieke have been contemplating a podcast. An opportunity to discuss spirituality, nature, community, and the interconnectedness of it all. All things they love, are very anxious about, and eager to explore. Radical, defined as "the relating to the fundamental nature of something." This term can be divisive, but to Jenny and Phil it is an invitation to connect back to the divine goodness, the sacred, at the core of all creation. Radical Sacred is an invitation to join them in curiosity as they explore questions such as: What is an experience that led you to a kinder, more inclusive spirituality?Who was the first person you met that broadened your ideas about the Divine?Where do you experience the Holy?If liberation of self leads us on a pathway to liberation for all, what has that looked like in your own spirituality? How do you find joy and pleasure in these wild times?Has there been an anchor for you as your spirituality has shifted? How can the stories we tell ourselves harm or heal ourselves, and creation? Not experts, Jenny and Phil strive to live the questions while exploring the mystery of all that is unsolved in our hearts and souls. Will you join them?

From Scotland to Home: Bridging Pilgrimage Experiences with Rev. Alexa Eisenbarth

“One pilgrim makes a zealot, two pilgrims makes a pilgrimage” - Ted Lasso Rev. Alexa Eisenbarth, Associate Pastor of First Olympia UMC joins us today to talk about how her own personal pilgrimage to Scotland translated to her walking with her fellow pilgrims in her home of Olympia, WA and the importance of not going it alone. What do we learn when we go out walking long distances with others? And what can we learn from pilgrimage about the importance of rhythm, care, and rest both individually and in community? We talk about the softening that happens in true community, trees, and how our homes are just as sacred as the places we journey to. Alexa invited us into a ton of imaginative thinking and we know y’all will enjoy hearing this one!Cool stuff we mentioned this episode (or meant to anyways):  Alexa’s article The Posture of Trees: A Picture of Church Leadership First Olympia UMCSaio JourneysGilead ChicagoEnneagram 1: The Reformer Questions Alexa’s Group Processed while on pilgrimage that you may want to sit with in this post election time period : (from the Parish Collective) What do you notice? What do you avoid? What’s missing? What delights you? Pilgrimage Begins with The Door

An important part of pilgrimage is noticing the invitations that are all around us. Every pilgrimage begins with recognizing. What is inviting you to more of you and how can we recognize the doors that are for us. As you move through the world the next couple of weeks we wanted to give you practical advice on how to identify your own doors. Try 1 or 2 of these spiritual practices consistently and see what comes up for you in this time.  Journal for a few minutes every day. Start off simply - roses, bud, thorns. Reflect after two weeks - what are your patterns - what is helpful for you? What is perpetually harming you? Adjust accordingly.Take a walk outside in the same place every day for 2 two weeks. Don’t listen to anything but yourself. Notice what comes up.Talk to a safe friend about a time when you felt connected to your joy. Recognizing what’s bringing us joy helps us identify our doors. Are you reading something that inspires you daily? Read or listen to 5-10 minutes of music, a podcast, or nature sounds that bring you back to yourself.Remember to breathe. How is your breath today friend?  Place your hand on your heart and mindfully breathe for a few minutes. How does your body feel? Your mind? How are you a part of liberation of self and others? Part of finding our doors is being keenly aware of our place in humanity and serving others. We conclude this episode with a blessing from John O'Donohue: A Blessing Prayer in Difficult Times by John O’Donohue May you know tender shelter and healing blessing when you are called to stand in the place of pain. May the places of darkness within you be surprised by light. May you be granted the wisdom to avoid false resistance and when suffering knocks on the door of your life, may you be able to glimpse its hidden gift. May you be able to see the fruits of suffering. May memory bless and shelter you with the hard-earned light of past turmoil, to remind you that you have survived before, And though the darkness is now deep, You will soon see approaching light. May this give you confidence and trust. May a window of light always surprise you. May the grace of transfiguration heal your wounds.

The Journey to Integration using Internal Family Systems with Hillary Owen

Hillary Owen of Driftwood Healing joins us again today inviting us to journey inward as she shares about Internal Family Systems.  Hillary takes a complex topic like IFS and makes it easy by using imagery and storytelling. We learn that we all have different parts that make up our Internal Family Systems. All of our parts are inherently good but not all of our parts need to have the same authority in our lives. Hillary helps us journey through the expired behavior that is no longer serving us and reclaim the freedom of wholehearted living by embracing all of our parts.  If you are interested in working through complex issues with compassionate care contact Driftwood Healing.  Things we mentioned in this episode (or meant to anyways): We Can Do Hard Things: The Most Radical Way to Heal We Can Do Hard Things: Inside an Internal Family Systems SessionNo Bad Parts by: Richard SchwartzInside Out 2The Enneagram Spiritual Direction Radical Sacred Attachment Styles Episode with Hillary Exploring the Complexities of Grief with Hillary  Chapters00:00 Introduction to Internal Family Systems and Grief 04:26 Understanding Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy 09:47 The Role of Family in Internal Work 14:03 The Importance of Integration in Parts Work 18:43 Preparing for the Internal Journey 29:41 Engaging with Parts and Finding a Therapist 36:27 Navigating Spiritual Practices as a Parent 38:57 Understanding Self-Denial and Cooperation 42:10 The Role of Trauma and Mental Load in Identity 45:36 The Importance of Silence and Community 48:51 Integrating Parts Work and Enneagram Insights 53:49 Transformative Moments in Personal Growth 01:00:04 Resources for Deeper Understanding

    Jenny's Gulf Coast Pilgrimage

Being folks who are typically more comfortable talking about things than actually doing the things, it was important to us to both take time this season to go on pilgrimages both big and small. In this episode Jenny reflects on her favorite place to pilgrimage, Galveston, TX. Jenny shares about what makes the Gulf Coast a sacred space for her and we invite folks into reflecting on their own sacred spaces.  Going on your own pilgrimage soon and unsure of where to start? Here’s some gentle suggestions based on what helps Jenny get in the flow:  Fresh journal & poetry books (Mary Oliver, Ada Limon, Ross Gay, John O’Donohue, Andrea Gibson, James Baldwin, Padraig O’Tuama are good places to start poetry wise). The purpose of pilgrimage is to return to yourself. Your truest you. Questions that typically help me do that areAm I betraying myself in any way? How can I better honor who I am at my core? What is bringing me joy? What people, places, things, am I being invited to learn from right now?How am I playing a role in the liberation of all people, including myself? While spending time outside, create some nature related rituals for yourself.Feeling like you need a cleansing? Go for a moonlight swim.Needing to be reborn? Bury yourself in the leaves or sand and emerge.Needing to feel grounded? Go for a barefoot beach walk.No judgment, in creating a nature based ritual. Just do what feels right and invitational to you. There’s no wrong way to pilgrimage! Follow the spaces and places that call to your heart. Sacred places, spaces and tunes we mentioned this episode (or meant to anyways):  Galveston State Park La Kings Candy Store Shrimp N Stuff San Luis PassSummertime’s Close by Zach Bryan The Kookaburras by Mary Oliver Chapters00:00 Introduction to Pilgrimage and Personal Journey 03:18 Nature as a Pilgrimage 05:42 The Discomfort of Pilgrimage 10:14 Finding Beauty in the Journey 12:15 Listening to Our Wants and Needs 14:47 The Importance of Disruption 16:54 Reflection and Integration 18:36 Preparing for a Pilgrimage 22:32 Surprises and Lessons Learned 24:34 Defining Personal Perfection 27:40 The Healing Power of Place 29:50 Reconnecting with Our Draw 31:57 Practical Tips for Reflection 35:12 Closing Thoughts and Poetry
