  1. Give Me the Stones (WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON [1993] feat. Duane Swierczynski)

Give Me the Stones (WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON [1993] feat. Duane Swierczynski)

This one is something special. That statement doesn't just apply to the movie WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993) from director Anthony Hickox, which is the subject of this new episode. As much as the movie itself made for an entertaining discussion, what makes it special is that we're joined on this episode by returning guest Duane Swierczynski! We had a wonderful time chatting with Duane in our LORD OF ILLUSIONS episode a couple years back, and we're so thrilled to have him back on the pod to talk about the next installment in the WARLOCK series, as well as the Holiday Book Drive currently underway for 2024 via The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation (benefitting The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles). You can learn more about The Evelyn Swierczynski Foundation and donate to them directly at: https://www.teameviefoundation.com/ We also absolutely encourage everyone to check out Duane's work (including CALIFORNIA BEAR and the recently reprinted SECRET DEAD MEN), and you can visit his official site for more details: https://www.gleefulmayhem.com/ The Commando-inspired "Infinity Tree" design from the fabulous Erica Henderson mentioned in today's episode can be found on her Threadless page: https://ericafails.threadless.com/ If you'd like to follow us on social media, you can visit our Linktree page (linked below) but we've also listed some of our social media handles: Linktree: linktr.ee/scarystuff Official site: scarystuffpodcast.com Twitter: @scarystuffpod Instagram: @scarystuffpodcast Letterboxd: @scarystuffpod Incredibly Niche Merch: teepublic.com/user/scary-stuff-podcast You can find a list of all the previous movies we've reviewed and their corresponding episodes (via the "Read Notes" option) here: https://letterboxd.com/scarystuffpod/list/all-reviews-scary-stuff-podcast/ And as always, thanks so much for listening!

  2. Some Few Remarks Upon a Pod Most Dire (WARLOCK [1989])

    OCT 21

Some Few Remarks Upon a Pod Most Dire (WARLOCK [1989])

It's our second Steve Miner movie in a row, as we're reviewing WARLOCK (1989) in our latest episode! We thought this would be an interesting movie to discuss after having so much fun talking about HOUSE (1985) in our previous episode, but we bumped it up the priority list after our host Eric watched its sequel WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON (1993). A review of that sequel is coming up soon (with a very special guest!), but before then we'll have our Halloween special, and Jake announces his pick for that episode at the end of our WARLOCK chat. In the meantime, we had a great time discussing a terrific script from David Twohy, along with some scenes trimmed from the original script, the directorial work of Steve Miner, and of course the fabulous central performance by the late Julian Sands. We really hope everyone enjoys this one. 3. Passionate Crime (SPELLCASTER [1988])

    AUG 31

    Passionate Crime (SPELLCASTER [1988])

Last year we accompanied our Doug Jones Day episode with a review of the cult classic SPOOKIES, featuring an ensemble of characters under siege from an evil sorcerer and his peculiar assortment of supernatural minions. This year we're following a similar pattern, but swapping out the Jay Estate in New York for Castello Di Giove in Italy, a locale that will be familiar to fans of the movies of Charles Band and Empire International Pictures. For our latest episode we're reviewing SPELLCASTER (filmed in 1988, but not released until 1992) from director Rafal Zielinski, featuring Adam Ant, Bunty Baily and KROQ-FM's own Richard Blade. We do start the episode with a bit of sad talk about recent life events for our hosts, but we had a tremendously fun time discussing the movie afterwards and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. If you want to skip over the sad bits, the movie discussion begins around the 13:30 mark. As of this release, the movie is free to stream on both Tubi and the Youtube channel for Full Moon Pictures, and absolutely recommend checking out the movie before listening to this review. And also be sure to see SPOOKIES if you haven't already, as it comes up a LOT in this review and is becoming an oddly integral movie for our pod. 4. The Friends of T.F. Merrit (NIGHT OF THE GHOUL [2021, Snyder & Francavilla])

    08/07/2023

The Friends of T.F. Merrit (NIGHT OF THE GHOUL [2021, Snyder & Francavilla])

It's our very first comic book episode! Although we've reviewed several movie adaptations of comics in previous episodes (SWAMP THING, BLADE, CONSTANTINE, etc), we're delighted to review our first comic miniseries on the podcast: NIGHT OF THE GHOUL from writer Scott Snyder and artist Francesco Francavilla. We get into what prompted our first comic review during the review, but this was a delight to record and we're so excited to welcome a special guest back to our pod: Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein! If you haven't read the comic miniseries from Best Jackett Press yet, you can read digital versions via Comixology / Amazon Prime, but we absolutely encourage you to pick up either the single issues or the trade paperback versions from your local comic shop. Please support our guest Jeremiah Jones-Goldstein by checking out his recent appearances on the Magazines & Monsters Podcast, or by visiting his comics site at https://comicscomicscomics.blog/ Our hosts Nick and Jake will also be in attendance at the ACME Show being held by our local comic shop Captain Blue Hen comics. That event will take place from 5pm to 9pm EST at the Newark Arts Alliance on August 19th!
