    The Shift/ Vision Weekend: Introduction to Jewish Discipleship

    What do you know about the kingdom of God? One interesting and exciting insight is that it was the central teaching of Jesus. “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” Matthew 4:17. Despite the kingdom of heaven (or God) being so central, many Christians have no idea of its significance. In this new sermon series called The Shift, we are going to look at the gospel of Matthew, who focused more on this subject than any of the other gospel writers. We will discover that the Kingdom of God is at odds with our world, and one of power, beauty and radical worth, ruled by Jesus Christ the King of all kings. Yet living under the rule of a king, even if it is God, strikes against our instincts. After all, we are Americans, liberated from the English Monarchs. What freedom awaits the Christian who begins to shift their focus and allegiance to live for the kingdom that endures forever. We begin by looking at the birth of the King of this kingdom and learn to sit at His feet as His disciples. Follow us as we follow the disciple Matthew who shows us the majesty of King Jesus and the radical life of living in His kingdom!

    Remember Who HE Is

    Another year, another tax season, holidays, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, anniversaries, etc…these things constantly repeat themselves-things that we celebrate and remember for years; these are things that we never forget, but if we do, we are very disappointed in ourselves. The feeling of guilt and shame overtake us, and we scurry around frantically trying to make things right (missed a birthday, forgot a gift on Christmas, etc.) Or even if we remember we sometimes say, “I could have done that better…” “They deserve better,” “I could have planned better and not have waited until the last minute.” But do we ever worry about forgetting the purpose and call that God has for our lives? Do we ever worry about our prayer life becoming lackadaisical? Are we in a rush to serve the kingdom, are we just as persistent in making sure that we don’t forget the calling and the commission that God laid out for us?

    Were the Beatles right when they sang, ‘All You Need Is Love’? ‘It’s easy’, they crooned. We would all likely agree that love is not as easy as the song claims. Yet they were getting at the truth that the bible reached a long time before Lennon and McCartney wrote that song. It all boils down to love. Love God and love each other. Jesus promised, “By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35. Yet in our increasingly divided world, what is most important often seems to be the most lacking. How well will we love as a nation-wide election is upon us? How distinct will our love be as our culture tries to force us to redefine it? Will people know we belong to Jesus by the way we love each other in our church? Come along with us as we sit at the feet of 1 Corinthians 13 and look closely at a diamond called Love with all its brilliant, flawless facets. What we will see is the character of Jesus reflecting back to us. Our aim is to discover what Love Is and how we can have the power to live it out.
