Why I am a standards-maker | Dr Maria Tomlinson
Standards affect all of us every day, wherever we go, whatever we do.
By defining good practice, they help people and organizations to do things better. For all sorts of things, from nanotechnology to Net Zero guidance.
And these standards are made by standards-makers – tens of thousands of people from around the world - who get together to agree good practice to the way things are made and done. All helping to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
In this episode, Matthew speaks to Dr Maria Tomlinson, an academic at the University of Sheffield, about her experiences of being a standards-maker for BS 30416 – menstrual and menopausal health in the workplace.
Maria describes her motivations for getting and staying involved in standards, the impact standards-making has had on her career, and her proudest standard-making moment so far.

Customer Reviews
Timely, accessible and insightful
This show is wonderful. It presents a variety of very specialized topics in a very accessible format that is insightful and extremely helpful for all of us in the field globally.
Fresh viewpoint on a necessary theme!
While the world of standard making me seem rather dull, and at times painful, the presenter does an excellent job of making the journey interesting and applicable to every day life. This is a great podcast for anyone interested in international or national standards, also those who are involved in policymaking, or who just want to make a change for good in this world.
