    RAF Bomber Command: Episode 4

    In the 4th episode we follow Frank Griggs and the new direction of RAF Bomber Command. By this point in 1942 the RAF was producing massive amounts of new aircraft and crews. They also changed tactics to attack single targets with concentrated forces. After transitioning to the Shorts Sterling four engine bomber as a Sargent Pilot, Frank and his crew participated in the initial 1000 bomber raids. During one hair raising mission Frank’s aircraft were attacked by night fighters. After shooting two of the attackers down he was able to pilot his stricken plan to a crash landing at his home airfield, a mission where he and his crew were awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal by the King of England. After completing 30 missions, Frank applied to be, and was commissioned, an officer. Due to his record, he was hand-picked to fly the new, top secret, Mk9 Mosquito pathfinder.

    In Episode 11 of The Supersonic Bone Ken ’Prime Time’ Katz interviews Lt. General Richard ‘Harpo’ Clark (ret) about the use of the B-1 in Operation Iraqi Freedom. General Clark describes the deployment of the B-1 to Oman and supporting Operation Enduring Freedom while waiting for the order to attack. Once the order was given General Clark discusses how a bomber designed for delivering nuclear weapons at low levels changed to delivering conventional ordnance at a high level. The inherent flexibility and capability of the B-1 design allowed multiple pre-planned targets to be attacked, then loitering to be available to hit dynamic targets on-demand.

    In the 3rd episode of RAF Bomber Command, our story continues with the low points of WW2 where the allies were reeling on all fronts. ‘Boil’ reads letters from his grandfather Frank Griggs, who was only 20-years old at the time, about losing his friends and his feelings about England. 1942 marked a turning point where the new commander of Bomber Command, Arthur Harris, bought together cutting-edge navigation technologies, use of pathfinders and new four engine bombers, to bring the fight to the enemy.

    RAF Bomber Command: Episode 2

    In episode 2 of the RAF Bomber Command, ‘Roger’ and ‘Boil’ describe the buildup needed to equip bomber units to take the fight to the enemy through the personal accounts of ‘Boil’s’ Grandfather, Frank Griggs. Frank began his journey in Australia, volunteering to be a navigator, but was then ordered to be a pilot in the Empire Training Scheme. After initial training Frank sailed to Canada to complete pilot training in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Then sailing to England, Frank trained to fly the Wellington Bomber. Through his tour, Frank flew missions across Europe, culminating in is his final mission in the Wellington, attacking German Battlecruisers in the daring Channel Dash.     In the first episode in our new series of the RAF Bomber Command, Scott ‘Roger’ Chafian and Lance ‘Boil’ Lewis provide an overview of the history of the RAF leading up to the beginning of Word War II. With visions of being the strategic force to project power, in 1939 the Bomber Command was a small force of two engine bombers. While starting to build the force, Bomber Command went through a massive transformation from using bombers to attack military targets during the daytime to area bombing at nighttime. Leveraging the Commonwealth nations of Canada and Australia to train pilots in a sanctuary, “Boil” begins to share his personal connection to the story.

Prior to nuclear power, submarines spent much of their time on or near the surface making visual or use of radar the principal ways of detection. With the advent of nuclear power and air independent propulsion, everything changed. Listening, or passive detection, became key. Roger and Sunshine discuss the characteristics of water that influence the ability of the submarine hunters to detect and locate a submarine, even identifying specific submarines based on their individual sound signatures.

    In this week’s podcast Scott ‘Roger’ Chafian talks to Paul ‘Booger’ Holst about a topic seldom explored, Two Seat Hornets in the US Marine Corp. ‘Booger’ explains the reasoning behind having using the ‘D’, maintaining the (AW) in squadron designations, and the differences in use between the ‘C” and the ‘D’ versions of the Hornet in the USMC. Starting out as a single seat Hornet pilot allowed ‘Booger’ to see both sides of the topic, and most importantly how each supported the Marines on the ground.
