This week we’ve got a question from S Darkwell who writes:

"A few months ago, I began a bi-weekly(ish) gaming night. My friends provide the location, and my girlfriend and I provide the games and teach them to play.

I've come to realize that I'm atrocious at describing how to play board games. I'm relatively new to these games myself, but if I were to simply sit down and play, I could do so without issue. The moment it comes time to teach others, however, my mind becomes scattered and I begin forgetting even fundamental rules. I regularly spend hours watching board game review/how-to-play videos, but they don’t seem to have improved my teaching skills in any meaningful way.

I suspect the issue is that in any given situation, my focus snaps to the social aspects of the environment. When I should be describing the board game, I'm instead noticing whenever anyone shifts their weight, glances elsewhere, or moves a component.

The irony is that in the past, I’ve been hired to give informative presentations on stage in front of hundreds of people and never had an issue. Something about the smaller more-personal environment makes teaching board games a far greater challenge.

Firstly, do you have any recommendations on how to better teach board games in general?

Secondly, do you have any suggestions on how to maintain focus on teaching the game instead of the people in the room?

Thank you in advance for the advice, and be well!"

Steve_D12 ,

Great Board Gaming Show!

Love the interaction and community based podcast that Moe and Sean run with the Tabletop Bellhop. I always find these type of podcasts (where the hosts are so interactive) the best. Catch them stream the live show on twitch, email in questions, chat via twitter, etc, these guys are very open to chatting and are always asking for participation. If you’re into board gaming you owe yourself a subscription to listen to the show. One of the few shows I tip via patreon. —Steve D

Repetitive dialogue

The episodes would be half the time if one co-host didn’t rephrase and repeat everything the bell hop says. It’s maddening.

Brian Kurtz ,

Great podcast for all tabletop gamers

I really love this podcast and look forward to it every week. Moe does a great job of presenting tons of information about all kinds of tabletop board games and answering listener questions - in one episode, they gave a great answer to my question about cooperative games for kids. Even though Moe's knowledge about games is so much greater than mine, listeners of any experience level can really enjoy the podcast, as he discusses everything from what's the best expansion for Settlers of Catan to why you need to be playing Azul to how to teach complex tabletop games to other people. Moe also has a great blog where he explores these and other topics, and if you are free on Wednesday evenings, you can even watch Moe and Sean live as they stream the show on Twitch. I love this podcast so much and it's just getting started. Give it a listen, you won't regreat it!
