Episode 223: Many Questions for Many People with Many Microphones (Live from the 2024 Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo Field Trip to NEI)

Episode 223: Many Questions for Many People with Many Microphones (Live from the 2024 Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo Field Trip to NEI)

Earlier this month, NEI had the priviledge of hosting the students and staff of Santa Fe College's Zoo Technology Program for an all-day field trip to our home base facility (aka "The Ranch) in Winter Haven, FL, and leave it to us to find a way to turn it into a podcast. This week's episode is the Q&A panel that Chris hosted, featuring Steve Martin, Clarie Santiago, Brad Moore, DonnaSue Evans, and Sage Treloar answering questions from our visitors. We covered a lot in just about 30 minutes, and despite some challenges with the recorded audio we think there's a little something in here for everyone.

Episode 221: A Journalist's Guide to Training the Human Animal (with Amy Sutherland)

Episode 221: A Journalist's Guide to Training the Human Animal (with Amy Sutherland)

Well, this one is certainly a blast from the past! On this episode, we are extremely excited to welcome journalist and author, Amy Sutherland! Chris first met Amy 21 years ago (!) when she came to spend time with him and his classmates at Moorpark College's (then-named) Exotic Animal Training and Management Program (aka "EATM") to do research for what would become a book about the program (Kicked, Bitten, and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World's Premier School for Exotic Animal Trainers). A few years later, this lead to a widely-acclaimed New York Times article about how Amy applied the animal training principles she'd learned to her husband, which shortly thereafter lead to another amazing book about the power of using good operant conditioning techniques with the fellow humans in our lives (What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage: Lessons for People from Animals and Their Trainers). We had a great time catching up with Amy to chat about what it was like getting a crash course in "our world," getting her perspective on the importance of what we do, and asking us some great questions about our hopes for the future of the field.
Shout outs in this episode: NEI's own, Steve Martin!

Episode 220: We're Scientists! We're Doing It! We're Doing the Thing! (with Jeremiah Shon)

You know what they say: you send Chris and Ari an email, you end up on the podcast. We're super happy to welcome Jeremiah Shon from John Ball Zoo to the show! Jeremiah is a recent NEI workshop attendee who reached out to share some cool training stuff that he and his team have been doing with their birds recently, so we brought him on the show to talk about how they put together their "group training program," the process of getting buy-in from people at all levels, the importance of seeing ourselves as scientists, and the value of recognizing when an idea you created doesn't belong to you anymore.
Shout outs in this episode: Amy Fennell, Erin Moloney, Katelyn Ferringer, and Scott Trauger. Ya'll rock!

Episode 219: Positivity and Leadership in a Field of "Cultures of Silence"

Episode 219: Positivity and Leadership in a Field of "Cultures of Silence"

Our hosts dig into all forms of media - print, social, and electronic - to discuss the challenge of "cultures of silence" in the zoo field (which, we beg your pardon, involves us repeating a little salty language), and chat about some good advice about how positivity and leadership behaviors can help, courtesy of great recent articles in IAATE's publication The Flyer by NEI's own Amy Fennell and Ari Bailey!

Episode 218: Good Luck Getting Rid of Me! (with Brittni Rice)

Episode 218: Good Luck Getting Rid of Me! (with Brittni Rice)

With Chris stuck in traffic between work locations, Ari is joined by NEI's own Brittni Rice on the eve of her first anniversary with the company! Brittni shares her history in the field, the differences between working as a show trainer and a zoo keeper, the experience of being both a learner and a teacher, why she doesn't want to go back to marine mammal training anytime soon, and the joys of being our Unofficial Official Funtime Coordinator.

The sky’s the limit when it comes to this podcast and you never know who the next guest speaker is or what topic they will touch upon next! Highly recommend!!!

Useful in all aspects of life!

This podcast has taught me so many useful tips and tricks not just on animal related things for work, but even more about people interactions. It is truly helpful even for those who are not in the animal field, but looking for better ways to communicate with peers. There’s great episodes that can help on the leadership side of things too! I have learned so much from their podcasts, it has helped me grow into the human I am. I have learned new ways to support those around me and build better, more positive relationships with others! Thank you NEI Tec Talk!!!!

Educational and entertaining

Hello All!

I highly recommend this podcast to anyone and everyone who has an interest in animal care and behavior. As a current animal science student this podcast has been a fantastic dose of animal behavior and “behind the scenes” conversations, and insights to real day to day animal care situations that I do not get while earning my degree. On top of all of this Ari and Chris speak in terms and with a realness that everyone can relate to. Love this pod ! #ForeverSpeakingIntoAMicrophone ☺️
