Listening Sure Means Fine Times! Jack Benny was one of the greatest entertainers and media pioneers of the 20th Century. The “show within a show” concept was groundbreaking and allowed for lots of great gags, as well as giving the audience the feeling that they were allowed behind the scenes, and in on the jokes. That approach engendered a loyalty that few comedians can imagine. A regular stream of celebrity guests inhabit this world, from Benny’s Beverly Hills neighbors like Ronald Coleman to bombshell Rita Hayworth. They all know Benny’s reputation and the ensuing gags are priceless. Benny’s comic genius was chiefly in making himself the object of fun. He’s cheap, insensitive, vain, ungrateful, and pampered. The cast roasted him at every opportunity while the audience roared with laughter. He was the straight man much of the time, letting the other cast members have the great lines. He paved the way for Sid Caesar, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Gary Shandling, Jerry Seinfeld, and many others. John Henderson does a wonderful job of adding context and fan enthusiasm with every episode. Use this show regularly to increase your attention span, decrease your modern cynicism, and bring your sense of humor to a carefree, happy-go-lucky place. Nine out of tens listeners agree. “Sold, American!”
