Usually, this weekly blog is about the 2nd Reading for the upcoming Sunday at Mass. However, I can’t stop thinking and praying about the Gospel from last Sunday, and so I wanted to pass on what the Lord has been sharing with me in prayer in the hope that it might be helpful and timely for perhaps one other person out there.

Many years ago now some friends of mine adopted a young boy who was maybe nine or ten years old. He had spent most of his life going from orphanage to orphanage in the country where he was born.


Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Someone crying is someone who is in need or hurting somehow. They are acknowledging they’re not all together and need help of some sort, thus the cry. Isn’t this us when we call out to God for His grace to help us be the men and women He made us to be and that we want to be?

Some years ago, I found myself utterly absorbed in Fleming Rutledge’s The Crucifixion: Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ. It’s a most worthwhile read, especially at this time of year. One of the chapters is entitled, “The Godlessness of the Cross” and I thought the following excerpts might be helpful for us as we prepare to enter into those days that the Church often simply calls “the great week.”
