Heather Miller
Balanceness

Hi friends, I’m Heather Miller, CEO and Founder of social impact start up GrasshoppHer, Talent Acquisition and DEI specialist, mom of 2 humans and 3 fur babies (most under 4), former professional ballet and hip hop dancer, yoga teacher, interior designer, caregiver, provider, retirement planner, innovator, social connector and the list goes on. As you can tell from my bio, I’ve always taken “drive” to the extreme and, for the most part, done pretty well juggling all of my hats. However, I say this on behalf of most of us, the past 3 years have been challenging. My personal experience included moving to an unknown city, the unexpected death of my mother and the birth of my first child two weeks later, launching a startup during maternity leave, the pandemic, building diversity strategies for a global corporation in the wake of George Floyd’s death, another baby, and then, the icing on the cake, a lay-off. I felt like I was approaching a mid-life crisis, with no space to do so. As a result, I’ve been thinking about balance (and whether that’s actually a thing). Join me as I speak with some amazing thought leaders and women in my life to understand how they keep the fire going and the lights on while staying sane. We’ll explore drive, juggling priorities, taking no prisoners with your schedule, love and sickness, pursuing your dreams, enjoying the journey and figuring out what is right for you. We hope these conversations help you err on the side of midlife epiphany versus midlife crisis. Welcome to Balanceness!

Dr. Ieva Martinaitytė on creativity as a state of mind, embracing polarities and becoming a boss innovator

Today I had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Ieva Martinaityte, who has been researching workplace creativity and innovative behavior for 15 years. Her research findings have been published in leading journals, such as Journal of Management, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. Ieva has taught courses at the University College London and the University of Cambridge and is now a visiting lecturer at University of East Anglia in the UK. She is also the founder of a CreativityLab (www.creativitylab.co.uk) whose mission is to  demystify creativity and make it accessible to everyone, which is exactly why I wanted to speak with her. Ieva is also the author of D!P® method, which teaches individuals how to work and live like an innovator. The D!P® method includes research backed, practical visual nudges to spark daily creative routines through play cards that have been shipped to more than 10 countries and 3 continents (link below).    Ieva and I met several months ago and being the creative natured person that I am, I totally geeked out on her work. I loved the idea of a tried and true method to get us into the creative flow because as we all know creativity can feel elusive at times. So, I asked Ieva on the podcast to learn more about how we can harness the power of creativity to boost our productivity, innovation, and most importantly, our sense of balance. In this episode, we talk about how Ieva’s D!P method, like Balancesness, was born out of a desire for balance and, spoiler alert, how integrating play or physical activity into our daily routines can change our output. We also explain the interesting polarities in her work, such as how mundane activities like cleaning can be creative and how we can “work” while not working, which really changed the way I have been thinking about my daily schedule. If you are looking to understand how to integrate work, life and creativity, this episode is for you. Kevin Noble on integrating polarizing thoughts, testing the limits of balance and building the mind-body connection.

Today we welcome Kevin Noble on the show. Kevin is a tech industry veteran with 17 years of cross-functional leadership experience. He started his professional life with a masters degree in mechanical engineering, and soon transitioned into broader business roles. Today his expertise spans across hardware and software system design, operations, finance, manufacturing, and more. He has run large global teams and led complex transformation projects across numerous functions.   In addition to his professional accomplishments, Kevin is a family man with a wife, three children, and two rescue pitbulls. He is an avid reader, consuming over 100 books a year, and loves staying active through a variety of physical activities, including rucking, running, weightlifting, and obstacle course racing. You'll frequently find him out in nature or in the kitchen cooking for his family.   I loved recording this episode because it gave me the opportunity to pick the brain of another chronic “side hustler”. What I mean by this is that Kevin is someone with a multitude of passions and external pursuits and also, has an extraordinary ability to structure his time for them. In this episode we talk about time boxing activities, but giving ourselves enough flexibility to accommodate ad hoc scheduling as well as polarizing thoughts on career and money. We discuss using experiments to test the parameters of our balance and staking our days with optimal components to keep feelings of anxiety and depression in check. Most interestingly, Kevin gives us some tools for being present and for building the mind-body connection. If you enjoy this conversation, you can hear more about Kevin’s hard-earned insights on leadership, mental models, and frameworks through his weekly newsletter, "The Catalyst." Gabe Wieder on start up life, empathy fatigue, the importance of representation in business and second chances

Today we are talking with Gabe Wieder, Head of Operations and Product at SOMETHINGS, a mental health platform for teenagers. He started the company having a background in Product Design from Stanford, as well as history of crisis work in the mental health field. SOMETHINGS was able to raise a seed round of $3.2 million led by General Catalyst this past year, and is still growing! Gabe is currently transitioning out of his role at Somethings to move into venture capital. This path has been spurred on by his involvement with Gaingels, the work he has done for the One Mind Accelerator, and experience as a start-up consultant for friends and colleagues in his free time. He is particularly interested in tapping the potential of VC to reshape the mental health space.    Gabe and I met several years ago while he was exploring his career next steps and I was leading Talent Acquisition for experienced professionals at McKinsey & Co. We reconnected recently and I was struck by everything that he has accomplished in the past 2.5 years. I invited him on the podcast to hear about how he is managing startup life and what he has learned about himself in the process. In this episode, we talk about the techniques Gabe uses for maintaining physical and mental health while championing teen mental health and what he does to fill his cup. We also talk about the act of personal-branding and repackaging ourselves as we iterate on ourselves and our careers. Finally, we talk about the importance of representation in business and, fascinatingly, how we deal with having a new lease on life. I enjoyed this conversation so much that I wanted to stay on and riff with Gabe for hours. I hope you feel the same.    +Website: https://somethings.com/ +LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabe-wieder-32954a177/ +Website: https://www.heathermillernow.com/balancenesspodcast +Website: www.grasshoppher.com

Episode 16: Indra Gutiérrez on intention setting,  time management and value prioritization

For episode 16 of Balanceness, we welcomed Indra Gutiérrez to the podcast. Indra has over sixteen years of experience working in the construction industry overseeing multi-billion-dollar Engineering, Procurement and Construction projects across the Gulf Coast Region. She is the Owner and President of Gutier, a General Construction company located in Houston, TX. She oversees Gutier’s business operations, business development and organizational strategy. She has received an Executive MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. in International Business from Houston Baptist University, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Houston. Indra is passionate about women's representation in the construction industry. She currently leads the Women’s Network within Gutier, whose mission is to empower the next generation of female leaders in the construction industry.   Indra and I met last year at a Kendra Scott EmpowerHer Summit speakers dinner and we immediately hit it off. Her passion for the construction industry was palpable and I was impressed by her dedication to women rising the ranks. I was curious about how she maintained the energy to helm and scale a construction start up, so I was thrilled when Indra agreed to share the secrets of her success on the podcast. In this episode we talk about setting intentions (the night before), surrounding ourselves with supporters and the importance of saying no. We also talk about sticking to our calendars and prioritizing self-care in whatever way that is for you. My major takeaway from Indra is that we must be as strategic as we are at work at home to maintain a personal balance in the face of busy times. I hope you benefit from Indra’s words of wisdom as much as I did.    +Website: https://gutier.com/ +LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/indra-guti%C3%A9rrez-79924679/ +Website: https://www.heathermillernow.com/balancenesspodcast +Website: www.grasshoppher.com

    Matt Golt on sustainable living.

Episode 15: Matt Golt on sustainable living.    In episode 15 of Balanceness, I had the pleasure of interviewing my Sidebar colleague Matt Golt. While Matt’s official bio is short, “I love writing on growth and leadership. Lover of fitness, people, and coffee”, his fitness resume goes deep. At the young age of 23, Matt became the Co-Owner and Manager of Montreal's well-known and popular gym Blackout Fitness. He parlayed this experience into his own boutique gym and the build out of a fitness-based application that would track the progress and metrics of his clients. When the pandemic shuttered his doors, Matt pivoted to business growth and development for startups and clients alike. In this role Matt indulges his passion for helping people and businesses grow through the power of kindness and perseverance.  In this episode, we explore the importance of building a well-rounded life. Like many people with active minds, Matt has used fitness since childhood as an outlet for his energy and as a cultivation mechanism for focus. Being a naturally driven character, Matt found himself in overdrive on one or more occasions. In his early days of owning and managing gyms, he found himself in burnout mode. During the pandemic, he turned to run / bike / swim as a support during this challenging time, and to act as the next challenge in his life. However, with a full-time business development career, Matt has begun to rethink his dedication to fitness in favor of sustainable living. Join us as we discuss what it means to integrate fitness into a life full of relationships, work and balance.   +Website: https://www.heathermillernow.com/balancenesspodcast +Website: www.grasshoppher.com +LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewgolt/ +Insta: https://www.instagram.com/matthewgolt/

Episode 14: Fátima Sani on remaining open, staying relevant and seeking purpose.

It was my absolute pleasure to welcome Fátima Sani on this week’s episode of Balanceness. Fátima and I were connected by a colleague at work and after a quick introductory conversation over Zoom we became fast friends and penpals. We are both curious souls raising toddlers in cities that are not our own and seeking purpose in both our professional and personal lives. The rest will be history my friends.    Every stage of your life can be a honeypot, which is how Fátima reflects on her life after working for Google for 13 years, living as an expatriate in London, Spain, Singapore and now Norway. She has crafted an unique path for her career providing technical and commercial leadership for known products like YouTube, Google Analytics, Nest, and Webex. Her career is a testament to how we often don't know where your career will bring you, yet by having clarity of your needs and humility to perform you build the right recipe to create your own success.    Fátima was born in Lisbon, Portugal and now works as Business Manager for IT Ecosystems at TOMRA, she is a self proclaimed startup CEO drop out turned angel investor. Fátima was in the top 5 women in tech in the Nordics 2022, she studied Business at the University of Wales, UK and later graduated from a Masters program in Energy Management at BI Oslo and Berkeley University.    In her own words, "The desire to become led me to openly seek opportunities every time I felt barriers or low acceptance. This ability to find solutions unfolded layers of truths that were once unimaginable to me. I believe in building bridges that help more unexpected people to feel empowered, that is my superpower and leadership style"    In this episode we explore why Fátima eventually decided to leave her career at Google for a less known recycling company and why underrepresented women should consider the industry. We also touch on the more personal topics of setting priorities, defining the minimum requirements for happiness and how that creates balance for Fátima. If you like this episode then you are in for a treat. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we dive deeper into Fátima’s experience with raising children, staying relevant and personal branding.  +Website: https://www.heathermillernow.com/balancenesspodcast +Website: www.grasshoppher.com +LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fatimasani/

Tiffany Caprarella on nomadism, multiple lives and grounding activities.

This week’s guest, Tiffany Caprarella, has lived multiple lives. Tiffany and I met during one of these 22 years ago while on a public bus traveling to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. I noticed that her then boyfriend had a Canadian flag tattooed to his ankle, so being the good Canadian that I am, struck up a conversation with the two. We spent the next few nights ogling over ant formations, diagnosing the wildebeest-like noises coming from the jungle (turns out they were Howler monkeys) and sampling gallo pinto. We learned that we were both slated to move to Toronto, Canada after our Central American adventures and, even more serendipitous, two streets apart from each other. We set upon building an incredible friendship that has taken us to international locations and through life’s ups and downs.    Tiffany grew up in La Cresenta, LA and attended Los Angelos County High School for the Arts where her love of theater blossomed. She completed her BA in Education and Deaf Studies and has a Teaching Certification in Secondary Education in English and Dramatic Arts. She has taught in both residential schools and public schools for both hearing and deaf students and in wilderness schools internationally. Most recently, she has worked at Paramount as an on set teacher in Canada and the U.S. Tiffany speaks English, Spanish, ASL and Portuguese and has traveled, climbed and surfed in too many locations to list on this page.   After a recent conversation about Janalogue during which Tiffany has limited her online time to 1 hour per day, I wanted to further explore the way in which she thinks about and prioritizes her time. In this episode, we explore what drives Tiffany to explore new environments and how she uses visualization to choose her next destination. We talk about using our working hours to provide structure and grounding ourselves in more itinerant times. If you’ve ever thought about working to live as opposed to living to work, Tiffany is your gal. I hope this episode helps you think about developing new hobbies, staying curious and cracking the code for living multiple lives.    +Website: https://www.heathermillernow.com/balancenesspodcast +Website: www.grasshoppher.com
