The Trip
Join Roads & Kingdoms and host Nathan Thornburgh for this evolving travel podcast, currently on hiatus in 2024. Archives include long boozy global interviews and Anthony Bourdain-led deep dives. Always, though, beats have been by Dan the Automator, artwork by Daisy Dee, show art by Edel Rodriguez. All advertising proceeds go to NYC's Let Us Breathe Fund for which this show has raised thousands, even in hiatus. So thank you for listening.

Really fun Podcast

Love how the hosts travel around and talk to people. If more people did this, America (and the world) would be much less divided. Fun and informative!
Worth a listen to expand your mind

The Trip has long been one of my favorite podcasts. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the various perspectives and insights from around the globe concerning culture, food, current events, and just how people are getting through their day. Just relax, listen and open your mind to the views of people unlike yourself. You might find they are not all that different.
Reality mixed with hope

Thank you, Nathan, for keeping this podcast going during the pandemic. Your interview technique and narration somehow cast hope through harrowing experiences of real people. It helps during this very diffcult time.
Thoughtful, funny, enlightening

What more could you want from eavesdropping on conversations and insights from interesting people? A delightful ramble through macro to micro, that keeps a thoroughly grounded and informed (if irreverent) perspective. Love it!
The highlight of my week is back
2020. 04. 14.
I always used to listen to this show (pre-Luminary) under a mango tree at my favorite bar in Senegal. I was disappointed when they went behind the paywall (though come on, you’ve got to respect the hustle/who amongst us wouldn’t), but am incredibly happy they’re back. Hop back on the bandwagon, give this a listen, and transport back with me to warmer, less socially distant days.
Five stars but sad about the paywall

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast and am sad that it will be behind Luminary's paywall.
Disappointed

I’m disappointed this went behind a paywall. Bummed because as I understand that podcast need to make money but as someone who was donating to podcast and supporting them, it’s disappointing I
Very Disappointing

First few episodes were fascinating, story driven vignettes. Then it devolved into incredibly boring interviews where the editor just flies around the world to drink and have aimless conversations with his friends. I love Roads & Kingdoms, I’m disappointed they’d put out such a half-assed project. I kept listening, hoping it would eventually turn around, but finally unsubscribed. It’s not like there’s a shortage of interesting podcasts that are globally oriented.
Episode 37: growing up in the camps
2019. 05. 06.
A wonderful sharing of family history here. Thank you to Yukio and as always to Nathan for enriching our lives with caring conversations. Question for Yukio- did you extend your education after your military service at a university? I visited Manzanar in 2017 & thought the museum displays showed a clear pictoral history but surely lacked in evoking honest emotional trauma. Yukio has filled in this void by eloquently sharing his family stories here in this episode. Your grand children will cherish your words. SanDiego has a rich history of Japanese camp families who have told their stories in formats of plays, novels, lovely museum installations. SanDiegos public library director in 1940s (MrsBrown i believe)sent 100s of boxfulls of books via train to the children lving in the SantaAnita internment camp. As they were the very school children who had come into SD libraries. Her story has been published. Clare Liebhardt
But...
2019. 04. 01.
I love this podcast. Nathan does a great job guiding conversation, and I’d love to come hang out for at least one of these. However, hugely disappointed that they’ll be moving to Luminary (where you have to pay) in a few weeks. I get that everything is a cost/benefit, but a lot of others seem to make free/sponsored podcasting work, disappointed that roads and kingdoms doesn’t seem willing to continue to try.
