    Too Opinionated Interview: DeeAnn

We’ve all been in that dark, despairing place that multi-talented singer/songwriter DeeAnn sings of on her soulful, deeply passionate new single “Stay Here with Me.” We thought we had met the mate of our dreams, only to question everything when he or she walks away, sometimes without reason or warning. No matter what we’ve been through, we remember how it felt to be with this person who changed our life and we’ll do anything to have just a little more time.  Recorded live at Red Booth Studios in Rochester, NY with a full band and string quartet, “Stay Here with Me” was originally released on DeeAnn’s 2019 EP Stay Here, but now makes the perfect follow-up single to her remarkable 2023 breakthrough album It’s My Time. There were a lot of possibilities to choose from, including any of the beautifully arranged standards and originals from her latest collection. She chose “Stay Here with Me” because it’s become a much-requested staple in her live performances at Buffalo hotspots like Sportsmen’s Tavern, PAUSA Art House and the historic Colored Musician’s Club. DeeAnn could never have imagined it at the time of recording, but the concept of “Stay Here with Me” extends beyond the realm of romantic longing as an expression of her grief and enduring love for her son William, who passed away in a motorcycle accident at 23 not long after she and Odel had completed most of the tracks of It’s My Time. When DeeAnn returned to finish It’s My Time, she added several new, very personal songs, starting with a heartrending, gospel-influenced version of “You Are My Sunshine”, a song she sang to William to put him to sleep when he was a child.  Odel’s sensitive yet rousing and inspirational production features members of the Buffalo Philharmonic String Quartet (Roman Mekhulnov). Another original tune she added, the soulful ballad, “A Little Romance,” is a homage to the “angels” who helped her during her lowest points.  The singer laid the foundation for her newly burgeoning career with her cleverly titled 2017 collection Desperately Seeking DeeAnn.   Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

    Too Opinionated Interview: Zara Phillips

As she celebrates the release of her extraordinary autobiographical film Somebody’s Daughter, Zara Phillips offers up some tough love truths that fly in the face of the often cheery, sanitized way adopted children (and other beings) are depicted in Disney films and other media. From her years of advocacy, studying contemporary sociological research and personal experiences as an adopted person herself, the passionate lifelong advocate for adoptees knows that even well into adulthood, their existential struggles of feeling like outsiders with little known stories of their history and birth parents makes them at least four times more likely to attempt suicide. They are also much more inclined to turn to addiction as a coping mechanism, as Zara did in her teens and early 20s. Somebody’s Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara’s personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. The project’s true driving force is tofacilitate honest, vulnerable conversations about adoption. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen.  In 2014, Zara’s one woman show Beneath My Father’s Sky, directed by Eliza and Eric Roberts won Best Direction at NYC’s United Solo Festival and was performed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Connecticut and London in 2016. During this era, she was presented with an Angel in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute. Her most recent album, released in 2020, is Meditation and Kitkats, and she currently tours and performs with her husband, British folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, who scored Somebody’s Daughter.   Want t owatch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

    Too Opinionated Interview: George Whitty

Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with multi-Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty to talk about his new musical endeavour WHAT!!!! In addition to playing live with the likes of The Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, the late David Sanborn and Chaka Khan, as producer and session keyboardist, Whitty’s credits include Santana’s blockbuster Supernatural (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion’s Falling Into You and These Are Special Times, Hancock’s The Imagine Project and hundreds of others. He has won four Grammys for his work on Chaka Khan’s The Woman I Am, Randy Brecker’s 34th and Lex, Michael Brecker’s Tales From the Hudson and the Brecker Bros.’ Out of the Loop. Amidst all the searing soul balladry, deep spirituality, insightful and impactful social consciousness and rousing funk on their infectious dual album In the World, legendary, world-wise cats George Whitty and Ellis Hall – collectively pooling their decades of musical passion as Whitty Hall Artistic Team, aka WHAT!!!! - infuse a beloved, inevitable R&B classic into the enticing mix. Driven by Hall’s trademark rousing vocals, their fiery, tight groovin’ and brass fired twist on Isaac Hayes’ co-penned “I Thank You” takes the 1968 Sam & Dave classic to fresh, exciting heights. It’s a way for the duo to express gratitude for their incredible individual careers and all the serendipitous events that led them to this epic moment.   One of many potential hit singles and film licensing opportunities from the 10-track collection, “Die Living” is a simmering blues-soul anthem whose title came to Whitty out of the blue one day and led him to create a powerfully rhythmic gospel-influenced song with a bit of a raw front porch vibe. Hall’s combination of vocals and organ drive the track, and he also adds various guitar tracks. In part inspired by a cool response Willie Nelson once gave a journalist who dared to ask if he would ever think of retiring, “Die Living” offers dynamic food for thought about wringing as much meaningful life experience we can during our time on this planet.  WHAT!!!!'s new album In the World releases on February 14th, 2025.  Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)
