Brown Enough
What does it mean to be Brown in a Black/white world? That's a question Dominican-Colombian-American actor, author and storyteller Christopher Rivas has been navigating his whole life. Listen in as Chris discusses identity, careers, and taking up space with other Brown activists, creators and change-makers. Brown Enough is the stories between Black and white. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the feed to find Rubirosa, a ten-part documentary series about Porfirio Rubirosa, the Dominican diplomat, playboy, and international polo champion who was the inspiration for James Bond. The show tells the true story of Rubi’s incredible and complicated life and Chris learns what it can teach him about love, success, family, Hollywood, code-switching, white-washing, and the roller coaster of finding himself in a world not made for Brown folks like him.

Chris you are wild in the “Please Don’t Hate Me” episode. That being said, within the first 5 minutes of your previous girlfriend speaking - it was clear why you broke up. There are profound cultural, historical, and emotional issues that affect interracial (specifically white & non-white) relationships. It does not make sense from a white perspective but it makes perfect sense from a non-white perspective - hence the break up/divide. Brave way to introduce and explore the topic!

Brown Enough is the breath of fresh air. As a third-generation Latin man living in the U.S. I’ve often found myself feeling like I didn’t really have a solid home base, a community of sorts. My white peers often saw me as token and because I didn’t have a strong connection to my roots, I never really made many Latin friends. The effects of generational assimilation often left me feeling emotionally isolated instead of integrated. Brown Enough covers the topics and conversations I’ve always wanted to have but never found the space to. The ethno-conscious professionals and scholars Rivas interviews find that space and fill in the gaps. I finally feel heard!
