    S1E3 For Women: Enjoying Christmas with Mrs. Cratchit

    This past week, we finished the fall semester of Trinity College with our annual dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and our Cratchit Family Christmas Feast. Reading this lovely story again, I was struck by how Dickens describes Mrs. Cratchit’s emotional state during the Cratchit family Christmas dinner. She is anxious over the pudding, too nervous to have anyone join her in the kitchen, and she’s been fretting about the flour—all because of her desire to create a wonderful memory for her family.     S1E2 Bach's Christmas Oratorio

    Over the weekend, Trinity College enjoyed our Christmas Convivium. We arranged for a trip to Lexington to hear the Kentucky Bach Choir perform of selections from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, a rich, devotional, and profound choir piece that celebrates the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah. At Trinity College, we expect a lot from our students, but we don’t expect them to jump into an early 18th century liturgical oratorio—in German, no less—and understand much. So I put together a short talk to help orient our students to the life and times of Johann Sebastian Bach, his Christmas Oratorio, and why we would bother to devote a night of an already busy Christmas season to an 18th century choral work, in German.     Dads, how can we father Christmas? How can we reflect the generosity, care, attention, and affection that our heavenly Father has shown to us? This Advent season, we have responsibilities and opportunities that extend far beyond putting together new toys on Christmas Eve.     Story-telling has a unique power to shape a people. Today, when we tell stories to our children, we are joining in a long, long tradition that goes back to the Bible. I have become captivated by the invitation in Psalm 78:4 to join this long tradition of generational storytelling: “tell the coming generation of the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” That’s why Trinity College is starting TELL, a new publication to help parents, pastors, and educators raise young men and women to know and love the gospel of Jesus Christ.
