  1. RIP Nikki Giovanni Jr.

    RIP Nikki Giovanni Jr.

On a solo-hosted episode of Trash Flow Radio on Sat Dec 14, I played new tracks from The Hard Quartet, Cream Soda, Kareem Rahma & Tiny Gun, Vacation, The Foreign Correspondents (Ted Leo / Brendan Canty) (covering Michel Pagliaro), Beef, Guided By Voices, Flowers Destroy (Doug Gillard), The Reds Pinks & Purples, Humdrum, and Mdou Moctar. Plus: newly-issued archival tracks from Pet Products, The Frogs, S.Y.P.H., and The Ladybug Transistor. And: old faves & rarities from Mardou, Scrawl, The Muppets, and Tweens. And: December 14 Birthday Tracks from John Lurie (1952) (Lounge Lizards); Frank Allen (1943) (Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers); Jane Birkin (1946-2023); and Richard Allen "Dick" Wagner (1942–2014) (Lou Reed, The Bossmen, Alice Cooper, The Carnival of Sound, KIϟϟ). I also memorialized the late Black Arts poet Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni Jr. (June 7, 1943 – Dec 9, 2024). This week, I also attended The Fairmount Girls' excellent holiday show, from which I was removed from The Comet by two uniformed Cincinnati police officers, who took to the stage to call me out by name! I recounted the whole sad story on this week's episode. I also attended the second night of Cincinnati's stellar annual Santamania festival at The Mockbee, at which I avoided further trouble with the Cincinnati police by parking legally several blocks from the venue. (Many concertgoers parked illegally on the venue's block, and were all awarded with $65 parking tickets at the end of the evening's festivities). Playlist https://imgur.com/nJTlxry

  2. DJ Dog Bite "Found Sounds" Special

    30.11.2024

DJ Dog Bite "Found Sounds" Special

On Sat Nov 30, while I was away on another secret Thanksgiving mission, DJ Dog Bite held down the Trash Flow Radio fort quite admirably. Joined in the WAIF studio by DJ Z, DJ X, DJ Slim Jim, & DJ Goombah: DJ Dog Bite aired a special THREE-HOUR episode packed with "found sounds," field recordings, dramatic readings, interviews, animal sounds, experimental music, and choice tracks and oddities from around the world! Including: prime tracks from: Bruce Haack, Jon Kennedy, Mouse On Mars, Jan Jelinek, Carl B. Stokes, Parham Ghalamdar, Ken Nordine, The Offspring, Bulgarian State Choir, Edith Hillman Boxill, NWP (a/k/a Nina Payiatis), Olivia Tremor Control, Alabaster DePlume, Michael Levy, Pärt Uusberg, DJ Martillo, Vince Guaraldi, The Blasting Company ("Over The Garden Wall"), Albert Ayler, Elvis Costello, David Attenborough ("The Amazing Lyre Bird"), Werner Herzog (on chickens), Almeda Riddle, McGee Brothers, Anna Leino, Del Close & John Brent, The Velvet Underground, The Pygmies Of The Ituri Forest, Manuel Göttsching, Michael Harper, The Orb, Tony Schwartz, Enfant Libya, The Blind Street Musicians Of Cusco, Los Caminantes, Kewjora, and Standing On The Corner, and a dramatic reading of Ezra Jack Keats's poem "The Snowy Day" by DJ Z. I should mention that since DJ Dog Bite's previous appearance on Trash Flow Radio, she has launched her own weekly radio program, "A New Place To Rest," which delivers contemporary new music, jazz, ambient, and everything in between. "A New Place To Rest" airs every Thursday from 1:00pm-3:00pm US EST on WAIF 88.3 FM in Cincinnati, or worldwide. It also now has its own Web Site (with archives) at . Most Thursdays, DJ Goombah co-hosts the program (though not always under that name). Playlist Page 1: https://imgur.com/b18MfEm Page 2: https://imgur.com/nJH3PVK

  3. RIP Shel Talmy, Reese McHenry, Andy Paley

    23.11.2024

RIP Shel Talmy, Reese McHenry, Andy Paley

On a solo-hosted episode of Trash Flow Radio on Sat Nov 23, I played new tracks from Horsegirl, Good Sad Happy Bad, Cistern, Superchunk (covering Dead Moon), The Eurosuite, Corker, and The Mekons, plus newly-issued archival tracks from Comet Gain, Sentridoh (Lou Barlow), and Daniel Johnston (including a Paul Simon cover and an original). Plus: old faves & rarities from Warsaw (Joy Division) and Bill Fox (The Mice). And: posthumous November 23 Birthday Tracks from deep blues musician R. L. Burnside (1926-2005) and experimental music composer Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-2020). I also memorialized the late powerpop mastermind Andrew Douglas “Andy” Paley (Nov 2, 1952 – Nov 20, 2024), with choice tracks from The Paley Brothers & The Ramones, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, The Real Kids, Brian Wilson & Andy Paley, Jad Fair's "Between Meals", and "The Real Jacques" (who were actually the Paley Brothers). And I memorialized the late North Carolina high-energy rock & roll singer Reese McHenry (Feb 14, 1973 - Nov 14, 2024), with prime tracks from Spider Bags and The Dirty Little Heaters, plus her final solo release. Finally, I memorialized the late Shel Talmy (Aug 11, 1937 – Nov 13, 2024), the American producer of some of the best British Invasion platters. On this episode, I spun Talmy-produced corkers from The Who, The Easybeats, The Creation, and The Damned. Immediately before Saturday's episode, I attended the funeral of Ass Ponys bassist Randall W. "Randy" Cheek (June 5, 1961 - Nov 12, 2024), whom I memorialized at length on Sat Nov 16. At the funeral (and all week long), I continued to learn about more combos that Randy Cheek recorded with, beyond the ones I played on last week's show. Some time in December, I'll air another round of Randy's juvenilia, esoterica, and apocrypha. Visual Playlist: https://imgur.com/PqrnryZ

  4. RIP Jamie Kilimek, Jon Williams, Donald Miller, + Wussy Record Release

    09.11.2024

RIP Jamie Kilimek, Jon Williams, Donald Miller, + Wussy Record Release

On Trash Flow Radio on Sat Nov 9, I returned to the WAIF studio and was joined there by Brenda Sauter (The Feelies, Wild Carnation) and music writer RJ Smith. Together, we previewed Saturday night's sold-out record-release from Wussy, which included the Chris Brokaw Rock Band as openers. To that end, we played two new tracks from the new Wussy LP, as well as a Wussy cover ("Crooked") recorded by Chris Brokaw, and a Busted Statues cover recorded by Consonant, the precursor to the Chris Brokaw Rock Band. On-air, Brenda managed to avoid disclosing that she would be playing bass with Wussy for part of their set that evening, which made the surprise that much greater when it happened. (Chris Brokaw also played guitar with Wussy on one song during their set, and to keep things fresh that song was not "Crooked"). We also played a couple of tracks by Brenda's current combo Wild Carnation during the episode, including one original and one great Yoko Ono cover. Before Brenda and RJ arrived at the radio station, I kicked off Saturday's show with a Modern Lovers track that addresses the present political situation. Then I memorialized the late Cleveland guitarist Jamie Klimek (Dec 28, 1950 - Nov 6, 2024), with tracks from Mirrors, The Styrenes, and Charlotte Pressler. I also memorialized the New England guitarist/producer Jonathan Patrick "Jon" Williams (May 21, 1965 - Oct 19, 2024) (Volcano Suns, Dredd Foole, Cul de Sac, Tara L. Key, Do It Now! Foundation), with a track from Volcano Suns. And at the end of the episode, I memorialized NYC/New Orleans noise legend Donald Miller (May 7, 1958 - Oct 22, 2024), with tracks from Borbetomagus and Sick Dick & The Volkswagens. In between, I found time to celebrate the Nov 9 birthdays of photographer Robert Frank (1924-2019), guitarist Tom Fogerty (1941-1990) (The Golliwogs, Creedence Clearwater Revival), Louisville drummer Richard Schuler (1964) (King Kong), international bon vivant Lisa Crystal Carver (1968) (Rollerderby, Suckdog), Riot Grrrl singer Allison Wolfe (Bratmobile, Cliquey Bitches), and French indie-rocker Yaya Herman Dune (1976) (covering The Silver Jews). The episode was so busy that (except for Wussy) I did not get to play any new records this week. I'll remedy that next week. But it was a fun and action-packed episode. And I'm glad to be back in the saddle again.

  5. "On The Way To The Peak Of Normal" Special

"On The Way To The Peak Of Normal" Special

This time, let me thank DJ Justin Patrick Moore for hosting another great episode on Sat Nov 2. For this episode, Justin was joined in the studio by DJ John Cadwalader, the creator of WAIF's one-time experimental music program "On The Way To The Peak Of Normal," and also by DJ Brian. Together they spun a bewitching web of mostly-instrumental "out sounds" from Neil Leonard & Scanner, cEvin Key, Kreidler, Hainbach x Nebula Instruments, The Langley Schools Music Project (covering The Partridge Family covering Herman's Hermits covering Gerry Goffin & Carole King), Aaron Diehl & The Knights (covering Mary Lou Williams), Noël Akchoté (covering Karlheinz Stockhausen), Thurston Moore, Biosphere, Alice Shields, The Anti Group (T.A.G.C.), Timber Timbre, Jac Berrocal & David Fenech & Vincent Epplay w/ Cosey Fanni Tutti, Lab Dub (Gaudi & Hardage) (covering Ennio Morricone), Ambrose Akinmusire, Henry Flynt, Dom Flemons, Hochzeitskapelle (covering Yo La Tengo), John Cage, Laura Veirs, Polypores, To Rococo Rot, C Spencer Yeh, The Magic Carpathians, and Terry Riley & Amelia Cuni. This was a sterling episode filled with sounds that were new to me and that I loved to hear. The Yo La Tengo cover in particular (performed by a contemporary experimental Bavarian Folk ("folkloristisch-elegischer Rumpeljazz") band from Munich, Germany) nearly knocked me off my chair. In many respects, last week's (Oct 26) episode hosted by DJ Deadly Loser and this week's (Nov 2) episode hosted by DJ Justin Patrick Moore were working on opposite ends of the Trash Flow Radio playing field from one another. But both of those DJs nonetheless found time to include an Ennio Morricone composition in their sets. I'll take that as a sign that although Trash Flow Radio is a big tent, there are certain commonalities of knowledge and taste that keep the whole thing coherent. I love listening to episodes hosted by every member of our titanic team. Page One of Two: https://imgur.com/NFt6Y99 Page Two of Two: https://imgur.com/Yv7I2iJ
