Buurtverzet helpt, bewijst het Noordenbergkwartier. Het is nu moeilijk voor te stellen, maar deze volksbuurt in Deventer was een kleine halve eeuw geleden een grimmige plek. Platwalsen en opnieuw beginnen, dacht de gemeente. Parkeergarages, kantoorkolossen en nieuwe woningen voor nieuwe bewoners. De buurt werd gered door een gemêleerde groep Noordenbergers, oud-bewoners en kunstenaars. Twee jonge architectuurstudenten, Jim Peters en Willem Smid, ontwierpen een alternatief ´wederopbouwplan´ ontwierpen, met betaalbare huurwoningen en voorzieningen voor de buurt. Onwaarschijnlijk maar waar: hun plan werd uitgevoerd.

TRASHLINIE laat zich rondleiden door Jim Peters en Toni Britsia. In deze aflevering hebben we het over de strijd na de strijd: De strijd om de buurt duurzaam betaalbaar en sociaal te houden. En we stellen de vraag of het voorbeeld van het Noordenbergkwartier dode geschiedenis is, of dat we lessen kunnen trekken voor de vernieuwing van democratie van onderaf? Part 3: REFLECTIONS AMIDST THE NOISE. "Sound can get contagious and move from mouth to mouth, or from body to body." In the third and final episode, we immerse ourselves in the remarkable sonic practices of two sound artists. On the Hembrug terrain in Zaandam, Mint Park takes us on a field recording session. Mint uses turbulence and field recordings to bring about a distinct non-human perspective. We also meet Davide Tidoni. His work involves flogging microphones and speakers, popping balloons and documenting the vocal culture of hooligans. In two languages, Davide provides a listening guide to his multifaceted work. What artistic and political potential is hidden in sound? An episode about risk, entropy, turbulence, contamination, control and chance.

Part 2: RESONANCES OF LOSS. In this episode, we listen to the sighing and groaning of a tired planet. In composer Evelien van den Broek's music, we hear field recordings of animals that no longer exist. This is how she tries to make the current "biological destruction" palpable. Peter Cusack travelled to Chernobyl and other ecological disaster zones as a "sonic journalist". What do places we know from the news but that we have never 'heard', sound like? And philosopher Salomé Voegelin reflects on how the COVID-19 crisis threw us back on ourselves, threatening to evaporate the sonic "in-between" between people. "There is no inner genius, there is only an outer connection."

RADICAL MURMUR is a three-part sonic essay on the possibilities of sound. We live in an age dominated by images and language. What do we learn about ourselves and the world when we close our eyes and open our ears?

Part 1: THE SONIC CITY. In this episode, we listen to the bustling hum of human activity, the reverberation of sounds between buildings and the familiar ring of the tram bell. What city sounds do we become attached to and why? How does sound help us navigate traffic, society and history? We climb a former Nazi bunker with sonic philosopher Salomé Voegelin, hear the squeaks and creaks of Berlin's S-Bahn with artist and sound connoisseur Peter Cusack, and reflect on sonic utopias and ways to 'read' city sound with sound artist Justin Bennett in a shopping arcade in The Hague.

Buurtverzet helpt, bewijst het Noordenbergkwartier. Het is nu moeilijk voor te stellen, maar deze volksbuurt in Deventer was vijftig jaar geleden een grimmige plek. Eeuwenoude gevels zakten vermoeid in elkaar, hele straten werden aan verkrotting overgelaten en bomgaten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog bleven gapend liggen. Platwalsen en opnieuw beginnen, dacht de gemeente. Parkeergarages, kantoorkolossen en nieuwe woningen voor nieuwe bewoners.

Gelukkig bleef de buurt behouden dankzij het aanhoudende actievoeren van een gemêleerde groep Noordenbergers, oud-bewoners, kunstenaars en twee architectuurstudenten, Jim Peters en Willem Smid. Zij tekenden een alternatief ´wederopbouwplan´ met betaalbare huurwoningen en voorzieningen voor de buurt. Een inspirerend voorbeeld van democratie van onderaf en architectuur als sociale acupunctuur.

Deel 3: REFLECTIES IN DE RUIS

Sound can get contagious and move from mouth to mouth, or from body to body. In de derde en laatste aflevering dompelen we ons onder in de bijzondere, sonische praktijken van twee geluidskunstenaars. Op het Hembrugterrein in Zaandam neemt Mint Park ons mee op een field recording-sessie. Mint gebruikt turbulenties en field recordings om een ander, niet-menselijk perspectief te bewerkstelligen. We ontmoeten ook Davide Tidoni. In zijn werk geselt hij microfoons en luidsprekers, laat ballonnen knallen en doet sonisch onderzoek naar de zangcultuur van hooligans. In twee talen geeft Davide een luisterwijzer bij zijn veelzijdige werk. Wat voor artistieke en politieke potentie zit er in geluid verstopt? Een aflevering over risico, entropie, turbulentie, besmetting, controle en toeval. En over geluid natuurlijk.
