the grieving episode

Mary Francis seems like she bypasses the deep despair in grieving - and how suicide can be an answer to grief yes it’s just thoughts - but…. that’s how some people deal with it something about her jovial tones do not match the depth of all the loss we all are experiencing today in this violent time - at least she worked with Roshi Joan
Outsider Wisdom

I am grateful that Sharon and James are so generous with their time. I am in a tight financial situation and these episodes are often a lifeline to sanity for me. Thank you. I also deeply appreciate the “outside wisdom” from non-practicing or Buddhist adjacent folks like Oliver Burkeman. I often find their insight more potent than the more “experienced” guests. They consistently provide Beginner’s Mind with care and sincerity. I also would like to give a shoutout to Jay Garfield specifically. He consistently blows my mind whenever he is on. His metaphor about a person being like a college is amazing. Also bows to Ethan Nichtern (sic?). Ya’ll should try to get Sturgill Simpson on for an interview. I think he is one of those “pratyeka buddhas”.

I was greatly disappointed to hear Kimberly Brown reference the work of Byron Katie in an approving manner. Byron Katie has caused harm and suffering to victims of abuse. Byron Katie is the worst example of a new age charlatan and I didn’t expect to hear her promoted on a Tricycle podcast.

My understanding is yet at a preschool level, and I have not done a three-year retreat, but this writer seemed to be quite smug and also judgmental in describing his acquisition of the vast diversity of what is made available in various meditations. I remain hesitant to learn from him - I haven't quite pinpointed why.
Amazing interviews

As a person who has been reading Tricycle Magazine since my teenage years, I am so happy to have come across this podcast. The episodes are deeply interesting—I especially love the episodes on anger, compassion, art, and more. There is wisdom to be found on every episode, and I can’t wait for future episodes. 🌱🌷

Embodied and Awake

James and Sharon’s conversation with Martin was one that struck me in a surprising and inspiring way. Martin’s ability to explain qualities of embodiment really made for a wonderful compliment to the work I’m doing with my somatic therapist and in my own seated meditation practice. As soon as it ended, I ordered Martin’s book, and I look forward to learning more about embodiment as part of the contemplative space and integrating it into my life and practice. Many, many thanks for this podcast!
