Imagine being at the forefront of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s research, holding hope for millions of patients. That’s where Eliezer Masliah stood—a top neuroscientist and key figure at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), responsible for overseeing billions in funding intended to push groundbreaking research on these devastating diseases forward.
But things weren’t as they seemed.
Recent investigations, including one published in Science (Vol 385, Issue 6716), have raised alarming questions about Masliah’s research. Over 100 of his studies may contain falsified data, including duplicated or manipulated images, claiming to reveal critical insights into how Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s impact the brain.
If this sounds eerily familiar, you’re right. Just two years ago, another scandal rocked the Alzheimer’s research world. Sylvain Lesné's 2006 Nature paper was considered a landmark in Alzheimer’s research—until 2022, when it was revealed that the paper was tainted by manipulated data. That revelation sent shockwaves through the scientific community, throwing years of research and drug development into doubt.
And now, we're facing a similar situation again.
The implications of these new allegations against Masliah are massive. His work has shaped entire fields of study, influencing experimental treatments like the Parkinson’s drug prasinezumab. But with these revelations, years of research and billions of dollars in funding hang in the balance.
What’s most heartbreaking? Real people—those battling Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s—are caught in the middle of this scandal. They've been placing their hopes in breakthroughs, trusting science to provide answers and relief. If the very research supporting their treatments is compromised, the cost isn't just in lost time and money—it's a betrayal of the trust placed in the system by millions of patients and their families.
We have to demand better. Science, and the people depending on it, deserve better.
