    233. Women's Sports, Drinks, Dreams: Building The 99ers Sports Bar

"We have to stand up for ourselves. We have to advocate for ourselves. We have to be that big voice because nobody else is doing it for us." -Annie   Welcome to the Turmeric & Tequila Podcast™ ! I'm your host, Kristen Olson, and today we have an empowering episode live from the 99ers Bar in Denver. Our guests, Annie and Miranda, are not only passionate athletes but also the pioneering founders of this women’s sports bar. Their journey began with a shared mission on the football field in the "Empower Her" league and evolved into a resilient partnership marked by transparency, community support, and unwavering dedication. Tune in as we delve into their challenges transitioning from the corporate world to entrepreneurship, their efforts in the growing Colfax community, and the cultural impact of their establishment. Experience their story of perseverance, 'failing forward,' and building a safe, inclusive space for women's sports. Get ready to be inspired by Annie and Miranda's relentless drive and the vibrant energy of the 99ers Bar on this episode of the Turmeric & Tequila Podcast™.   Time Stamps: 00:00 Success requires unseen hard work and dedication. 05:04 Excelled in multiple sports, faced gender barriers. 06:22 Exploring business events; inspired by grandma's wisdom. 12:30 Sports weave passion into life's fabric. 14:53 Meeting anticipation before Texas tournament participation. 17:22 Intense conversations felt purposeful and transparent. 19:34 Two women collaborating, navigating evolving narratives successfully. 24:08 Stand up, advocate; don't be taken advantage. 26:55 Embrace change; adapt continuously, like sports. 29:23 Proving oneself; overcoming familial and societal doubts. 32:52 Sports unite people, breaking barriers, fostering connections. 36:27 Colfax seeks growth, community, and vibrancy. 40:22 Personal loans drive intentional project, avoid investors. 42:19 Clarity and intention ensure perseverance and success. 46:40 Success is learning throughout the journey. 49:38 Sports provide lifelong connection and fulfillment. 50:42 Luxury's neurofeedback: effective, highly recommended for mental health.   About Annie & Miranda: Annie Weaver and Miranda Spencer first crossed paths on the field, playing for Altitude Sickness, a competitive women's flag football team in Denver. In addition to their roles as teammates, they forged a business partnership driven by a shared mission: to empower women and increase the visibility of women's athletics. Their motivation grew from the shared experience of navigating a sports landscape where opportunities for women were scarce. Both had grown up having to play on boys’ teams due to the limited avenues available for girls in sports. The concept of women being professional athletes seemed distant until they witnessed the historic 1999 Women's World Cup game. Yet, even in 2024, it is nearly impossible to find a bar airing women’s sports. The 99ers Bar seeks to change this reality. As Denver's first sports bar catering primarily toward women's athletics, it is part of a growing movement of women’s sports bars across the country. Here, women’s games are not merely broadcasted; they are celebrated. The space is dedicated to empowering all people who may not feel welcome at a traditional sports bar, including the LGBTQ community. No matter who you are or who you’re cheering for, at the 99ers Sports Bar everyone is a part of the winning team. https://www.the99erssportsbar.com/ @The99ersSportsBar   Connect with T&T: IG: @TurmericTequila Facebook: @TurmericAndTequila Website: www.TurmericAndTequila.com Host: Kristen Olson IG: @Madonnashero Tik Tok: @Madonnashero Website: www.KOAlliance.com WATCH HERE   MORE LIKE THIS: https://youtu.be/ZCFQSpFoAgI?si=Erg8_2eH8uyEgYZF      https://youtu.be/piCU9JboWuY?si=qLdhFKCGdBzuAeuI https://youtu.be/9Vs2JDzJJXk?si=dpjV31GDqTroUKWH

After losing her full-time job at a gym due to the pandemic in 2020—where she was both the nutrition coach and teens program manager—Jackie launched her online health coaching business, JMR Wellness. Her approach emphasizes body inclusivity and holistic health, focusing on what can be added to clients' lives to support their overall well-being, rather than solely on what they need to lose. She creates a safe space for athletes and clients, with many coming from neurodivergent, queer, and/or larger-bodied communities. Jackie has been a strong advocate for inclusion in the fitness world, founding and running Denver’s first gender-neutral CrossFit competition and previously leading the LGBTQIA+ Fitness Community Group. She also serves as the secretary on the board of directors for FYR Denver (formerly Steve’s Club Denver), a nonprofit that provides fitness, nutrition, and mentorship to underserved youth. In addition to fitness and coaching, Jackie likes to spend time camping with her 11-year-old son, watching hockey with her husband, hiking with her dog, Nala, and reading with her cat, Bast.
