Well-Made

Season 1 is a spooky story about an actress’s near-ruination at the hands of the infamous NXIVM sex cult; it’s the definitive podcast on NXIVM at the moment.

Season 2 is the dreary tale of a bomb that killed many people on a Canada Pacific flight in the ‘60s. Tbh there’s a mini-documentary and longform article about the crash on CBC’s website; both are more interstesting than the podcast.

These stories are meditative, they’re not necessarily designed to be bullet train-paced suspense thrillers.

Solid series, held interest throughout

S1: I mostly enjoyed this season, hearing the story of NXVIM. Having heard the news accounts, but not really having any perspective on the story, this season does a good job helping to understand the origins and undoing of this organization (well, cult). The only downside is the main interview subject (Sarah) comes off somewhat unlikeable and made more into a victim than I think she actually is. This probably has something to do with the fact that the series host was a childhood friend. That said, she is essential to understanding the in’s and out’s of NXVIM and the key figures in the FBI’s case against the organization.

S2: I really enjoyed the story, especially hearing how different air travel and the airport experience was 50+ years ago. The only downside is because the case is so old, there are very few interviews with investigators or family members. Therefore, this story is mostly all speculation, though still interesting.

S3: Interesting look into not only the many murders that plagues Toronto’s gay community going back to the 70s, but also the societal challenges the gay community had back then. I do think this season was a bit too disjointed and the timeline being all over the place made it hard to follow. The host clearly had a personal agenda, which is obvious throughout.

Masterful

I was recommended this podcast by several friends, but did not expect this to be so great- the reporting is excellent. The people in this story are treated with respect and compassion, as well as looks at the systemic problems faced as the search for their killers. The love and bravery of individuals is the palpable and more than once found tears in my eyes as I listened. This is how Podcasts should be done!
