VP#103: Landmark Pre-Thanksgiving Episode! Convention vs. Compassion with Animal Rights Hero and “World’s Most Influential Living Philosopher” Peter Singer, Author of New Book "Consider the Turkey"

Welcome to this landmark pre-Thanksgiving episode with Peter Singer! Peter Singer has been called the world’s most influential living philosopher. He’s been credited with starting the modern animal rights movement, and his work was certainly integral in my own vegan education. This month, he was featured in a New York Times interview titled "Pater Singer wants to Shatter Your Moral Complacency" - but between you and me, it was the Vegan Posse that got the real scoop. Peter Singer is a renowned moral philosopher and bioethicist, recognized for his influential contributions to applied ethics from a utilitarian perspective. Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1946, he was educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. Singer has held teaching positions in England, the United States, and Australia, serving 25 years as the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University. He is best known for his groundbreaking book Animal Liberation, which argues against factory farming and advocates for veganism, fundamentally changing the discourse on animal rights. His essay "Famine, Affluence, and Morality" encourages affluent individuals to donate to alleviate global poverty. Singer's recent work Consider the Turkey delivers a compelling critique of humanity's treatment of animals, especially in the context of traditional practices like Thanksgiving. His extensive body of work, including over 50 books and numerous essays, challenges conventional ethical views and urges consideration of the rights and welfare of all sentient beings.
