Homeschool boss moms & hustle culture with Adele Jarrett-Kerr

I’m thrilled to be sharing this conversation with you. I am a long-time follower and fan of Adele’s writing, and in this podcast we discuss her piece Homeschool mum hustle culture is giving MLM vibes, and all of our many thoughts about it. It was a beautiful, rambly (in all the good ways!) conversation that went so many places. We talk about: * working while homeschooling and the very specific challenge of that * why we don’t see HOW people make it work, even while we’re often told we can do it, too! * home education as a win-win lifestyle choice * how we are part of the decision-making around how to craft a life unschooled * the danger of online promises that you too, can have it all by following these easy steps (and paying for this workshop!) And so much more!! I would love to know your thoughts too. Do you homeschool and work for pay? What is tough about it, and what is wonderful? Why do we shy away from talking about the significant downsides of homeschooling, or the realities behind how people actually make it work? Fran x More about Adele: Adele Jarrett-Kerr is a Trinidadian mother of three who lives in Cornwall, UK. She home educated her kids until they were 13, 10 and 7 and founded Soulcraft, a learning community for home educated tweens and teens. She also works as a freelance writer. If you follow her online you'll get some thoughts on self direction and consent-based parenting.  You can find Adele on instagram, and here on Substack. This is a public episode. How we honour divergent experiences with Marni Kammersell

Hello friends! This is episode 2 of my new series that aims to challenge and critique some of the ways we view education, parenting and children’s autonomy. In this episode, I chat to Marni Kammersell. We talk about the Neurodiversity paradigm, moving away from a medical model, her own family’s journey discovering their neurodivergence, and how they moved into unschooling. It was such an honour and joy to have this conversation with Marni! I hope you enjoy it too. Some things that came up in this episode: * how figuring out who we are is a slow, unfolding journey - and it looks so different for everyone * Marni helped me define some common terms - so if you’re unsure or confused about what neurodiversity, neurodivergence, and neuronormativity mean, this is the episode for you * We discussed the Neurodiversity paradigm v. the pathology paradigm * We talked about how our Western language around neurodiversity is not necessarily transferrable to all people and all cultures.. and how there are plenty of critiques around this idea * We talk about giftedness and Twice Exceptionality - what this is, how difficult the language can be, and what these kids need * Marni shared her experience moving into self-directed education and about the research she is currently doing as a grad student A little bit more about Marni: Marni Kammersell is a neurodivergent educator who specializes in creating empowering, neuro-affirming home and learning environments. She is passionate about the neurodiversity paradigm, self-directed education, non-coercive relationships, and understanding experience through the lens of the nervous system. Currently pursuing her doctorate with a focus on neurodivergence and self-directed education, Marni has over 15 years of experience in alternative educational settings such as homeschooling, unschooling, community education, democratic schools, and forest schools. Her greatest teachers are her own three children, who have never been to school. You can find Marni at Wandering Brightly here on Substack, and on her website. Please bear in mind I do not edit the transcript at all, and so you may not get an accurate transcription of our conversation. How we radicalize ourselves with Sara Sadek

Hello friends! I’m excited to start another series of podcast conversations, focused on bringing you ideas and experiences of others who have chosen to challenge norms and assumptions around what it means to raise children, to mother and to live in ways that centre autonomy, consent and collective liberation. In this episode, I chat to Sara Sadek. I connected with Sara on Substack and have loved her writing ever since. It is powerful and absolutely necessary for this time. In this podcast episode, we talk about building community with a sense of shared values and purpose, what it means to radicalize ourselves as mothers and humans, and how to share our values with our children while honoring their autonomy. More about Sara below: Sara Sadek (she/her) is a mother, writer, educator and community builder living on the Ohlone land of San Francisco with her partner, two kids, and their very cuddly dog. "How do I get my partner on board with unschooling?"

This was such a super fun chat! We had some great conversations and laughed a lot! Marta talks about unschooling her 3 young people (two of whom are now adults!) and about the most common questions she has received about unschooling and home education. This is a great convo for anyone starting out with unschooling and having all the absolutely normal doubts and wobbles that come with it. Marta Obiols Llistar is an experienced educator and author with more than 20 years of experience in education. She holds a dual degree in special education and elementary education. She has worked in various educational settings, including daycares, preschools, private schools, charter schools, and public schools. Marta was born and raised in Barcelona and has lived in the U.S.A. for the past 23 years. She is the author of the award-winning parenting book 18, an unschooling experience, and #vidasincole. Her latest book, A Successful Education, is a comprehensive guide for parents interested in alternative education. Marta is passionate about helping parents help their children become happy, engaged, and successful learners by tailoring their education to their unique strengths and interests. She has educated her three children successfully outside the school system following John Holt's most famous suggestion to parents: unschool. Marta’s new book is A Successful Education. Her book about chronicling her home education journey is 18: An Unschooling Experience. Thank you for listening, let me know your thoughts!! This is a public episode. How Deep is your Deschooling?

We belong to you and meeeee!! Okay enough with the Bee Gees, let’s get to it ;) I’m so excited to share this episode of the podcast! I chat to Sari González and Becka Koritz about the nuts and bolts of deschooling: what it is, what it looks like, the places we get stuck and the ways we get ourselves out of them! I absolutely love how real they are about their own struggles and process, and how expansive their understanding of deschooling is. Must-listen for anyone in the weeds of deschooling (and isn't that every single one of us?!). A bit about Sari & Becka: Sari González and Becka Koritz are unschooling moms, youth liberation advocates, podcasters, parent coaches, facilitator trainers, consultants & founders of Radical Learning™️. Together they have 35+ years of experience supporting kids, adults & educational projects. They provide support at the intersection of unschooling, parenting, relationship & community building - empowering adults to support kids’ self-directed learning, autonomy and freedom. They also run Explora ALC, a pop-up Agile Learning Community in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, advocating for children’s rights & freedom. They see unschooling and parenting as collective liberation work where we develop practices centered in not just youth rights, but also human rights, social justice and building trusting & equitable relationships. They believe that by honoring the dignity of every individual, we can create more authentic relationships and strengthen the fabric of our world. Connect with them @radicallearning Some info about decolonized Non-violent Communication (NVC) that they mention in the episode, if you'd like to look at that further: https://www.meenadchi.com You can read the transcript at the top of this post. Want a joyful, connected relationship with food?

I love Deena’s approach, and in this chat I spoke to her about how to process our own relationships with food, how to not project them onto our children, as well as about diet culture, anti-fat bias, whether food is really neutral and how to partner with our children around food. I am ALL for making food a joyful and connected experience, rather than one full of restriction, arbitrary rules and moral judgments! Who isn’t? A bit about Deena: Deena Barselah is a Holistic and Integrative Health Coach who guides mothers and families all over the world to remove the chore from food and cultivate a more joyful, connected, easier, and confident relationship with food.  She's supported her own disordered eating, autoimmune conditions, and chronic digestive distress with gentle shifts in diet, habits, nervous system healing, and truly learning how to trust her body.  Deena believes there's no one-size-fits-all to food and that by cultivating a system that works well for your unique body and family, you can let go of the "shoulds" that weigh you down.  She lives in Encinitas, CA with her husband and son.  Previously, Deena worked in the corporate world in areas of Organizational Psychology and People Development.   You can find Deena at her website, or on instagram (She is currently on an IG hiatus, but her account is still full of helpful, informative content!) NOTE: You can read a transcript of this interview below, but please bear in mind I don’t edit the transcript and so it won’t always be accurate! Hi, I'm here today with Deena Barselah. And I'm super excited about this conversation because we've been we've been waiting a while to make it happen. And yeah, I'm just gonna let Deena say a little bit about who she is, what she does and how she came to do this work. Great, thank you so much for having me. This is like long overdue, and I'm so glad to be here. So yes, I live in Encinitas, California, Southern California with my husband and my eight-year-old son. And we are a homeschooling, unschooling, whatever label you want to apply type of family. And I am a certified holistic health coach and I've been working in integrative health coaching for almost 14 years now. And my journey to that really started in early childhood where I grew up. I'm 43 years old, so I grew up in the 80s and 90s. with every woman around me, either very distinctly being on a diet or off a diet. And when I say distinctly, it was very clear whether they were, you know, off the plan, kind of cheating, not paying attention to what they should be like all of those strong, all of those words and sentiments, feelings is what I grew up with. And then or they were on a diet and they were being really strict and talking about what they couldn't eat and what they shouldn't eat. And it was never to I'd like to be really clear that this was never put on me explicitly, where I know that that is the case for a lot of people. But as a very highly sensitive, deep feeling person, very aware of the feelings of everybody around me, and that's just how I came into the world and the kind of like a hyper vigilant, I get that there's a place for me to just not rock the boat and make people happy and be the good girl. That's how I came into this world and with different things going on in my family. And so as that person, I also was very attuned. To all the language and all the feelings around food. And it was just, you know, it was every, it was my mom, my mom's friends, my friend's moms, my teachers. It was literally every woman was talking about it this way. And that's how I grew up. And then as I, like I said, as a very highly sensitive person. Not really having a great outlet, or I should say like the way we talk about it in parenting today, like a productive and, you know, true to me, outlet for my emotions, they were stored and food became a really great way for me to, you know, food was a tool for me to fill myself up to channel those emotions
