In WASH SDG voices from the field, we'll get in touch with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) experts working in several countries in Africa and Asia. We'll talk about different themes related to WASH, and may include topics as varied as water governance, leaving open defecation behind or menstrual health and hygiene. The WASH SDG Consortium is formed by the WASH Alliance International (lead: Simavi), SNV and Plan International Netherlands. They partner with a large number of other (local) NGOs and public/private institutions.

    Episode 5: How climate change impacts socially disadvantaged groups in the WASH sector

    Climate change is impacting lives in the countries where the WASH SDG Consortium works, and going forward: the ways in which climate change will impact WASH services will continue to increase. These impacts will not be felt equally, and the burden of climate change is not and will not be shared uniformly. How does climate change impact the lives of socially disadvantaged groups? To answer this question, the host of this episode Anastazia Rutatina from Amref Health Africa speaks with Silvia Devina (Plan International, Indonesia), GC Krishna Hari (SNV, Nepal), Hasina Uttaran (Simavi partner Uttaran, Bangladesh). Together they'll give you a little preview of what will be discussed in the WASH SDG session during World Water Week 2022.     Episode 4. WASH at stake in health care facilities: the journey of 3 innovative answers/solutions

    Two years ago, WASH SDG did a call for innovation projects in health care. Any innovation was welcome: a pilot for a new business model, operational or production processes, policy practices and research into behavioural insights or ways of delivering products and services. By the end of 2020, three projects were approved. How are these projects doing almost 2 years later? Our host Ken Caplan invited Shrawasti Karmacharya (Hecaf360, Nepal), Putri Annisa Pramesti (SNV Indonesia) and John Mutebe (WASEU, Uganda) to discuss their achievements, challenges and future plans.  --- About the WASH SDG innovation fund: The WASH SDG innovation fund was established to complement and enhance the impact of the WASH SDG programme and to increase the catalytic effects or spin-off beyond this programme. It provides the opportunity to test innovative approaches and practices in the WASH sector and gather evidence of their impact (or lack of). WASH  in healthcare  facilities has been identified as a key challenge by several of the WASH  SDG sub-programmes. Additionally, the topic has received a lot of attention recently from the sector as highlighted by two important reference documents.     Episode 3. Toilets.. what lies beneath and beyond to keep you safe

    Today 3.6 billion people still live without a safely managed toilet. This means that even when some people have access to a toilet, they still face multiple risks. When we talk about toilets, our minds often gravitate to a white ceramic slab or pan. Many of us think that all toilets are connected to piped sewer systems. This is far from reality. Many people in developing countries rely on on-site sanitation that starts with containment that catches human waste and requires emptying. Behind each toilet are massive infrastructure and operational arrangements that form the foundations of a safely managed toilet. Together with two water and sanitation experts, Rajeev Munankami and Maria Carreiro, we discuss the urgent need to broaden our perspectives about toilets and make the term ‘safe sanitation’ actionable, especially in light of today’s rapidly changing climate. This episode is dedicated to World Toilet Day 2021: Valuing toilets.  The WASH SDG Consortium is formed by the WASH Alliance International (lead by Simavi), Plan International Netherlands and SNV.     Water usage is limited, and the amount of water available is shared with multiple sectors. When you build a latrine upstream, this will affect the water source downstream. Since IWRM and WASH are interlinked, it's important to cooperate. Together with two experts in the field, Evelyne Busingye (RAIN, Aidenvironment) and Tamene Chaka (Amref Health Africa Ethiopia), we discussed the importance of both IWRM and WASH, how they (can) collaborate and the next steps to be taken.     How do women in Africa and Asia manage their period in times of COVID-19? Normally, schools are the main source of reliable information and a safe place. Due to COVID-19, schools were closed, houses were packed and privacy was scarce, to not even mention the stress that comes with a pandemic. Together with two experts in the field, Andrew Samuel Kiiza (Plan International Uganda) and Pema Lhaki (NFCC, Nepal), we discussed the situation, the work that the government does and the next steps to be taken.  This podcast was produced as part of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021.
