Affect Autism: We chose play, joy every day
Affect Autism was created to help parents and practitioners apply the Developmental, Individual differences, Relationship-based (DIR) model to respectfully promote relating, communicating, and thinking in autistic children in order to invite out their highest potential. Research in neuroscience has supported a developmental approach over traditional behavioural approaches like Applied Behaviour Analysis. Affect Autism is more cost effective because it works with parents who apply the strategies that Floortime offers, promoting playful interactions over behaviour management techniques. DIR/Floortime respects where the child is developmentally, their individual sensory processing profiles, and uses the relationship to build trust and playfully challenge the child to relate, communicate and think, in order to invite them into a shared world where they can reach the potential they wish to realize.

I just wanted to thank you for this podcast. I began my DIR journey a few years ago and I often need refreshers on topics. Other topics are completely new to me. I especially enjoy the guest speakers! Thank you for keeping the dialogue going for those of us who feel isolated.

The topics are informative and really helped cement my understanding of all the theory behind DIR Floortime, but I wish there was more practical information on how to apply it at home. What I like about the podcast is all the resources she provides. When I have time I’m able to look up the resources for more practical support. But as a busy mom, I wish I could just listen to the podcast episode and pick up practical suggestions on that particular topic instead of being pointed to someone else’s site where I then have to go and do more reading or researching.
