We Need To Talk About Lucy Letby
We Need To Talk About Lucy Letby is a podcast series hosted by statistician Peter Elston and retired doctor Michael McConville. Lucy Letby was a neonatal nurse at The Countess of Chester Hospital in NW England who was convicted in August 2023 of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder a further six on seven occasions, though she was found not guilty on two counts of attempted murder and verdicts could not be reached in another six. In this series, Peter and Michael discuss the many aspects of the case and the steps over more than ten years that led to Lucy ending up in HMP Bronzefield serving 14 full life terms. But could it be the worst miscarriage of justice in British legal history?
Interesting, intellectual take. Poor production

A detailed look at the statistical case against Letby, flaws and all, is very interesting and hard to find. This podcast unfortunately is hard to listen to, with poor audio quality and constant blips/pops in the recording.
Love the indepth view

This podcast is one of the few places that actually explains this case from a medical perspective. The conviction is a travesty. Ten years from now we will be talking about statistical bias as the forced confession and satanic panic of this decade. Why? Because as the world’s wealthiest countries experience greater demographic pressure, medical systems including the NHS are coming under increasing strain. Nurses are the easiest scapegoats. In the midst of nurse shortages, this hospital cut budgets and made redundant some of its most experienced nurses the year before this tragedy. Imagine managing a new trainee while taking care of three tiny babies, and then years later being convicted (by a majority of jurors) of crimes that did not happen, based on the hunch of a tv personality Dr, just because you showed up and worked more than any of your colleagues.
Excellent Podcast (they take two episodes to warm up - but worth it)

These two very intelligent and experienced hosts (a lawyer and a doctor) go into minute detail about the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health report on the state of Countess of Chester Hospital during the period the murders were meant to take place and explain what this information means and how it contradicts the evidence the consultant paediatricians gave in court. They go through each baby’s case in great detail and explain the circumstances surrounding their deaths. This report was not mentioned during the trial. The information they give is all fact. I found it fascinating and very informative and contains a lot of information that has not been reported on at all. Well worth the time and effort to listen to it all. They have not done a podcast before and it took a couple of episodes for them to get into a engaging banter. Glad I listened to it.
Yes they need an editor

But this content is outstanding - hard to listen to and realize that this poor woman is probably going to spend years in prison for crimes that likely were not crimes.
