Some movies are arthouse masterpieces. Other movies are mainstream popcorn crap. And sometimes the crap turns out to be art and the art turns out to be crap. That’s what's great about movies. To quote Gary Sinise in The Cremaster Cycle, “Movies are like a box of mysteries. You never know what you're gonna get baby!” Each Friday on Weekend at Bergman’s, Forever Dog co-founders and movie lovers Brett Boham and Joe Cilio watch two movies - one from the arthouse and one from the mainstream - and pit them against each other in a fight to the death. Brett and Joe debate what makes the movies good and what makes them bad. They watch scenes. They present research. They solicit listener feedback. And at last, they decide which movie is The Better Movie and reward it with a place in the Canon. Meanwhile the Other Movie is tossed into the bottomless Trash Canon and Brett and Joe are never allowed to watch it again for the rest of their lives. That's the agreement they made. That's what's at stake. So what's it gonna be? The Seventh Seal or Weekend at Bernie’s? In the Mood for Love or She’s Out of My League? Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles or Die Hard? Which movies survive and which meet their demise? Listen to find out. Produced by the Forever Dog Podcast Network.

    Gummo vs Home Alone

    Gummo vs Home Alone

Lock your doors and board your windows! We’ve got unsupervised children on the loose! Representing the arthouse it’s Harmony Korine’s feature film directorial debut Gummo (1997). And representing the mainstream it’s that perennial Christmas classic Home Alone (1990) written by John Hughes and starring Macauley Culkin. Which will enter the canon? And which will enter the trash canon? Plus Joe plays a round of the new hit game, "Now Gummo."

THANK YOU LIAM CARROLL FOR THIS WEEK'S PAIRING!

Sweet Smell of Success vs The Secret of My Success (with Tom Scharpling)

Sweet Smell of Success vs The Secret of My Success (with Tom Scharpling)

I love this dirty podcast! This week we're joined by Tom Scharpling (The Best Show, Double Threat) to examine two cinematic portraits of the ups and downs of the Big Apple. New York City, that is! Representing the arthouse it's the endlessly quotable and deeply cynical Sweet Smell of Success (1957), starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. And representing the mainstream, it’s the Reagan-era Michael J. Fox vehicle The Secret of My Success (1987). Which will enter the canon? And which will enter the trash canon? Plus Tom plays a round of the new hit game, "Penthouse Apartment or Dead in a Ditch?"

Crimes of the Future vs Top Gun: Maverick

Joe flies solo on the first Double Feature - our look at movies currently in theaters - so it's up to him alone to decide what goes in the canon and what goes in the trash canon. David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future or Tom Cruise's long awaited Top Gun: Maverick?? Listen to find out!!

    Pi vs The Matrix

    Pi vs The Matrix

Journey with us through a cascade of 1s and Os to the glory days of hacking into the system. Representing the arthouse, it's Darren Aronofsky’s gritty black-and-white number theory thriller Pi (1998). And representing the mainstream, it’s 1999’s super smash cyberpunk hit The Matrix, directed by the Wachowski sisters. Oh a simpler time! When the teenagers of the world bopped their gelled butt cuts to the sounds of White Zombie and Prodigy. As Wordsworth said of the French Revolution "Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive. But to be young was very heaven!” But which move will win and enter the canon? And which will lose and enter the trash canon and Brett and Joe can never watch it again for the rest of their lives?? Listen to find out!

Killing Them Softly vs The Many Saints of Newark

We pay tribute to Ray Liotta (1954-2022) with a focus on the later stage of his career. It's Andrew Dominik's 2012 neo-noir Killing Them Softly vs the 2021 Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark. Which one will win and enter the canon?? Which one will lose and enter the trash canon and Brett and Joe can never watch it again for the rest of their lives??? Plus the winner of last week's showdown (The Red Shoes vs Showgirls) and a new segment, What Happened at Cannes?

NEXT WEEK: Pi (1998) vs The Matrix (1999)
